Corals not as threatened as we thought
Mar 1, 2016 Climate: Oceans
Blogging is going to be light for a few days. In the meantime, Ben Webster (£) notes that corals are not nearly as threatened as previously thought.
Claims that coral reefs are doomed because human emissions are making the oceans more acidic have been exaggerated, a review of the science has found.
An “inherent bias” in scientific journals in favour of more calamitous predictions has excluded research showing that marine creatures are not damaged by ocean acidification, which is caused by the sea absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

There's zero threat from OA - it is a blatant piece of fearmongering designed solely to add some semblance of additional support to prop up disobliging temperature datasets. Or in plain English, a manufactured con-trick.
While I haven’t fought a bear, I have ridden a rhino – does that count? (Though I have no idea what relevance this has to corals… but, there you go…)
Who could care?
Only the unluckiest or the dumbest fight bears. The wisdom of Native Americans is to drop to the ground, protect your head and stay still as if dead. It works and has been proven many times
Not a chance. You've demonstrated an inability or complete lack of capacity for thought many times.
Again, who could care?
Oh!?
Every word DiCaprio speaks in every movie, press conference and speaking opportunity is true?
From DiCaprio's press conferences and speaking engagements, I doubt DiCaprio's ability to know the difference between acting and real life.
Take for example, DiCaprio's announcement that could feel 'global warming' when he felt a 'Chinook wind'; a local weather phenomenon that is well known, to the locals, for several hundred years.
Ah, but a totally trustworthy ignoramus doesn't need weather reports or science, he just knows; and you believe.
Disappointing!
ATheoK, some might say that Ayla tripes with forked tongue in cheek. Bears always fight with a bare behind, and they may just schtop and schmidt on you, more likely if you prevent them going in the woods.
Anyway, there is a C before A in Caprio. I expect he was taught that in school before going home wearing Acprio's coat by mistake.
Buck up, Spectator, Monckton has thrown his bear in the ring against DiCaprio

There comes my hero, at last. Thank you Russell.
Taking a group of Boy Scouts for a backpack trip in the 'George Washington National Forest', one of the boys stepped in a pile of bear feces on the side of the trail.
Excitedly they showed me the pile and asked that I confirm it as bear scat; a large loose pile of berry and grape seeds with lots of unidentifiable crap.
Yup! Definitely bear. I looked at the scout in question and then at his shoe and commented; "I hope it was a male bear".
The kids ran to get well in front of us adults, all the while razzing the bear scat scout about male bears seeking female bears, who was determined to scrape his shoe on every rock we passed. When we crossed a creek, he walked straight through while everyone else hopped rocks. Yes, it was Fall season.
That night, after dinner, we collected all food and food like items, bagged them and hauled them up a rope then tied it well off the ground. Black bears were relatively common in that area and we had passed a number of bear sign where bears pooped, dug, back rubbed trees and just plain clawed trees. A primary rule when camping in bear territory is to separate food away from people so that bears do not have any reason to join campers in tents; excepting the rare bear looking to specifically eat people.
Dawn came and campers began to wake up. Bear scat shoe scout came walking up chomping on an apple. I and another scout leader quickly looked up where the food hung from a branch at each other and back at the scout.
"You do know that bears love apples", I asked the scout. One lesson taught.
Along came the scout's Father who had joined us for the hike. He was chewing a candy bar, while the scouts were trying to lower the food sack. Two lessons taught.
At least, both lessons plus one guy using toothpaste did cause us to have any adverse interactions with bears.
Yeah yeah, fight a bear. Something someone, that never saw a real bear close up, says in complete ignorance.
There are you tube videos of bears busting car windows seeking food. Watch the videos, most times the bears do not hit the window; they just lean or push a car safety window and it shatters. Can humans do that?
Ayla: Russell's your hero? I really, really, really hope you are being seriously tongue-in-cheek – for your own sanity, let alone your credibility.

Melanie Phillips in the Times (pay-walled) has developed on this theme. Some choice quotes are:
"Overplaying the threat to coral reefs is just the latest example of ideology distorting research "
"An “inherent bias” in scientific journals, says the editor of ICES Journal of Marine Science, has excluded research showing marine creatures are not being damaged."
"... whatever happened to peer-review... In 1998 [the]editor of the British Medical Journal, sent an article containing eight deliberate mistakes to more than 200 of the BMJ’s regular reviewers. Not one picked out all the mistakes. On average, they reported fewer than two; some did not spot any."
"A 2005 study by John Ioannidis, an epidemiologist at Stanford University, said the majority of published research findings were probably false."
"This is most egregiously displayed in climate science. In the “Climategate” scandal at the University of East Anglia, scientists suppressed research findings to “hide the decline” that had occurred in global temperature."
"In the words of Richard Horton, “science has taken a turn towards darkness”. "
Chill, rodent- anonymous cowards don't have heroes
Chill, Russell, name calling is unbecoming.
I adore you, btw.
To all those who feel that corals are 'fragile' I say Bikini Atoll. An atoll in the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands that has largely grown back since the US vaporized a large chunk of it. See http://www.bikiniatoll.com/
Ayla: you adore him even when he quite blatantly calls you a coward? You have odd tastes, indeed.
A thin skin is going to help you lots in this runaway global warming...
" the place is over run by Polar Bears ( they look lovable but they,re classed as Vermin )
