Discussion > Channelling dogginess

Martin A (16th Oct 2012):

Well, multiple pseudos used by just one or two would certainly give the impression that their beliefs are more widely shared than in reality.

BBC (8th March 2014):

Is this the same woman? Some social media users in Ukraine seem to think so.

The woman has appeared in interviews in cities across Ukraine under different names, spreading an anti-protest and pro-Russian message. It's led to a deluge of videos and pictures being shared on social media platforms as people try to spot the woman.

Anne-Marie Tomchak from #BBCtrending investigates whether this is the same woman and discovers a trend of spotting 'fakes' in #Ukraine.

Showing that social media correct their own weaknesses in the end?

There seems to be increasingly rapid recycling of many of the nyms we've come to know and cherish that channel dogginess. For the first time for well over a year I've asked one of the perpetrators about it in a main thread. Or the perpetrator in one of her guises. Or a guise in one of her perpetrators. You know the kind of thing.

I wasn't surprised that all four posts - Sparticusisfree, me, Sparticusisfree, me - were removed without trace. The person or persons concerned must be feeling dog-tired. Why not release the paper we were promised way back and be done with it?

I find that sickening, multiple ids
I would never do that.

Nor would I. Trolls don't care of course.

Troll culture is poison. It takes amazing mental gymnastics for these people to see themselves as the good guys.

That's John Siracusa tweeting earlier today about the terrible Kathy Sierra situation. Who's John? One of the most tech-savvy journalists of our generation. See his mammoth introduction to Apple's Leopard upgrade for Mac OS X in Ars Technica in October 2007 for example - a piece I greatly appreciated as I evaluated technical directions for myself and clients at that time. Who's Kathy? Someone deeply respected by people I look to like Ward Cunningham and someone who's finally had enough.

There aren't exact parallels with the difficulties climate blogs often find themselves in of course but I think it's useful and sobering background. And John's point about trolls posing as the good guys definitely holds all the way down the line. Are they?

…as they do challenge ones preconceptions [sic]…
Perhaps one should not have preconceptions. Personally, I like to think that the conceptions that I do have have been developed from the information gleaned from reading blogs like this (and others), and from asking questions and passing comment, and seeing the responses. On the “warmist” sites, any signs of non-belief generally elicits aggressive responses; these can be gained on “sceptic” sites, but only after much prodding. To give a broad stroke, my own observations that questioning the position of a “warmist” site can quickly generate very unpleasant responses; on “sceptic” sites, the responses are generally more gentle, offering guidance and advice, and frequent references to believable science (and do I know that that final phrase is going to raise a few hackles!). “Trolling” a site is just stoking up a load of resentment against you, as “trolls” rarely offers any constructive arguments; it might give the protagonist some sort of pleasure, but if it does, then one can only feel pity for the poor soul. On the whole, I tend to ignore such sad individuals, but it can be tempting to wind them up even further.

As for use of pseudonyms – what is the problem, if it is used for identification of an individual? I accept that there may be those whose position could be under review should their real opinion be known, but I do not understand why anyone would want a plethora of them – that suggests active attempts to deceive. I only use my pseudonym for opening bank accounts, etc., as my real name seems to be treated with some suspicion; it is wonderful to be able to act as freely as I can on here!

Why is there so much interest in AGW? For me, it is that the science involved has been subsumed almost totally into politics, and the politics is anathema to all that I hold dear, with its reliance upon greater government and greater taxation; as Ronald Reagan said: “You can’t be for big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy.” It is increasingly becoming obvious that none of this impingement into our personal lives by government is based upon any truth, it is solely upon the desire to control every microcosm of our lives; it is deceit by those to whom we have entrusted our civilisation, and who now seem determined to destroy it.

One benefit of my interest has been the revelation to me of the great minds of those like Richard Feynman, Thomas Sowell, Charles Payne, Walter Williams, Ron Paul, et al.

RR why please Drake...this and many other threads are all about Drake...he has to feed his ego...he has to remind us of the time he had cocktails wuith Eisenhower's widow and chatted about C with the Sultan of Brunei and Arnold Palmer. Just let him drift off into fantaises of golf club power.

As the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry remarked to me over dinner a few days ago, it's remarkable how some people go in for incessant name-dropping.

Oct 10, 2014 at 1:33 PM | Unregistered Commentersplitpin

As I was saying to my old drinking partner Mickey Mouse the other day there are some contributors of your type on Bishop Hill. Radical Rodent's not one of them. There are many nyms like him or her. There can be useful humility in using this kind of handle, as I express on the first page of the thread. The downside is the kind of evil experienced by Kathy Sierra. Only a small percentage - but such people always use a nym and, as John Siracusa observes, manage to persuade themselves they're the good guys. This seems closely tied up with the cult of pseudonymity. A complex and troubling subject.

Oct 10, 2014 at 6:04 PM | Registered CommenterRichard Drake

Radical Rodent:

- "the politics is anathema to all that I hold dear"

All? How can that be possible? Unless what you hold dear is severely limited.

- "reliance upon greater government and greater taxation"

A revenue-neutral carbon tax would increase neither the size of government nor overall taxation. It might even improve the lives of many people if the revenue were to be distributed evenly, not as tax rebates (poor people pay little tax to rebate).

- “You can’t be for big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy.”

Doesn't it depend which little guy you consider? The little guy without health insurance in Reagan's land would perhaps welcome greater government reach. Or the guy whose job was saved by state emergency spending after the banks blew up the economy might also be happy with government intervention.

- "It is increasingly becoming obvious that none of this impingement into our personal lives by government is based upon any truth"

No, it is not.

- "deceit by those to whom we have entrusted our civilisation, and who now seem determined to destroy it."

Alarmism is alive and well I see.

I see Drake is still SEOing himself into the same sentence as those he wishes to be linked to by search engines.

Oct 13, 2014 at 11:34 AM | Unregistered CommenterTheBigYinJames

Not sure what you mean, there, TBYJ; what do you mean by “SEOing”?

As for trolls, my hypothesis on them has been given greater credence; I truly do feel nothing but pity for them, stuck as they are in kicking over the bricks that the brighter in the playroom are making a tower with, possibly in the frustration of not being able to build their own towers.

Richard Drake and his friends, Tony Blair, Silvio Berlusconi, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner...just doing my bit to boost his search ratings

Oct 14, 2014 at 12:37 AM | Unregistered Commenterdiogenes

I'm going to be at the Pret A Manger at 81 Piccadilly from 6pm prior to walking to the GWPF Annual Lecture this evening. Just wanting my SEO ratings to go through the roof - because this is one of the most hit-upon pages on the Internet! Did you know Google's famous Page Ranking refers to Larry Page, not anything as boring as a web page? There, I'm doing it again. Larry's buying the coffee tonight. I'm incorrigible!

Oct 15, 2014 at 11:02 AM | Registered CommenterRichard Drake

Be careful Richard, or you might get Google on your case. :)
I while ago, over a period of days, I was idly clicking on some adverts at BH, messing around, wondering if it would really help his site or change the quality of the ads I got. Then I started getting invitations from Google to become a "trusted by Google" SEO "partner".

Two ways to interpret that, I think. Either a compliment or a threat. Seeing as I don't actually do SEO or anything similar, or even have a website, it seemed of little consequence. Still haven't figured out exactly what I did to attract the attention of the Google algorithm. But it has prompted me learn more about how Google goes about policing people/organisations who operate in ways that they consider cross the line. I'm finding it quite educational.

Oct 15, 2014 at 4:14 PM | Unregistered Commentermichael hart

An interesting area, Michael, of which I know little, probably less than I should. The theory that what I put under my name on BH is motivated by CEO reminds me of this from SJ Perelman: "My years in the Okhrana had finely honed my instincts and I detected he had a beard." If Perelman really was in the Tsarist secret police before taking up as a New York humorist then I certainly edit Bishop Hill for the purposes TBYJ has described.

A couple more sobering stories in the MSM in the last 24 hours. I'll select and only make one point from each but the full articles are worth study. In The Times today in Twitter comes under fire over antisemitic abuse:

The spate of anti-Semitic abuse against Ms Berger, Labour MP for Liverpool Wavertree, was triggered by the jailing of troll Garron Helm last Monday, who was sentenced to four months for a vitriolic attack against her.

Vindictiveness against anyone who publicly seeks to resist is a key marker. Here's another, from the BBC on the nasty GamerGate situation:

Journalist Allum Bokhari, a writer for TechCrunch, has said there was credible evidence that at least one well-known trolling group was "working to provoke both sides against each other".

Divide and conquer is an ancient strategy for those without moral compass and it's hardly surprising to see it in action in this area. I've taken many of the attempts to divide on Bishop Hill, including on this thread, as entirely synthetic, for that reason.

Oct 30, 2014 at 12:04 PM | Registered CommenterRichard Drake

Yes, you're such a big name in the climate world Richard, that trolling groups are out to get you. Deluded as usual.

Oct 31, 2014 at 12:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterTheBigYinJames

I didn't say that I was a big name in the climate world, did I TBYJ? This is something that Barry Woods accused me of thinking, publicly and angrily, in front of Andrew Montford, Anthony Watts, Nic Lewis and others in the pre-meeting I arranged at Caroline K's before Mann spoke in Bristol last month, effectively ending that meeting. I asked Barry where I had ever said I thought I was important. He had no answer to that. Later we had a very friendly discussion about some other stuff. But I mention it because the reputation you're trying to give me can have negative effects in the 'real world'.

Perhaps you'd also like to respond to my reaction to your barmy ideas about SEO, from 13-15th? Alternatively you could stop insulting me for no reason. The invitation to meet in person in London has never been rescinded by the way. I'd be delighted to learn that you're 'for real' and to hammer out any differences that way. For the moment I take you to be as genuine as a nine bob note.

Fair play Richard, I'll leave you with this image, which succinctly sums up what I think you're up to, bravo to whoever created this for my amusement, I'm sure you'll be preparing litigation soon, torn-face that you are.

I'll take a raincheck on the meeting, Richard. But never say never. The link is only to an anonymous image server, I think the image might tickle you.

Oct 31, 2014 at 3:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterTheBigYinJames

Back to the topic of this page. I've always been attracted by those that fight injustice but aren't big names. That's how I see Kathy Sierra, Luciana Berger and Zoe Quinn. I hope they do become big names but if they do it will be because they've taken a stand for truth. A costly one. Just like Regina Jonas did in the 1930s and 40s - the most unknown person I've learned about this year who showed incredible courage and prescience in her own day.

There is a battle going on at present against the worst forms of trollery. It takes courage to take a stand, although for some this is a situation thrust upon them, not of their own making. If I've paid any price for the truth myself, since I began to confront destructive pseudonymous actors in 1999, that doesn't make me either a big name or right. But it means I may have avoided the worst forms of cowardice, as I look to the example of others far ahead of me.

Oct 31, 2014 at 4:53 PM | Registered CommenterRichard Drake

Being only semi-pseudonymous here (many people here have my personal contact details) _ I like to pick and choose who gets them. Not all of us have the energy to fight for right all the time.
