Global Warming – Where Do We Go From Here?
London : Conway Hall, Holborn Tube

- Event by Centre for Inquiry UK (a freethought group that has been hijacked by green activists)

Mar 3, 2014 at 1:06 PM | Registered Commenterstewgreen

Hmm, tempting. Conway Hall's a bit of a favourite - the last time I was there it was a full-on debate among Muslims and others on whether it was ever right for UK universities to segregate males and females to accommodate visiting Imams and their radicalised hosts. A mixed audience, including mixed-up males and females, took a full part, I'm glad to report. :)

Mark Lynas : Science denialism on climate change, GM foods and nuclear power
@ Reading, UK
link
The Outlook (formerly Copa)
76-78 Kings Road, Reading, RG1 3BJ

Mark Lynas has challenged the political right over its denial of the reality of climate change, and the political left over its denial of the science on the safety and efficacy of GM crops and nuclear power. Why is it that political ideology continually trumps scientific evidence on some of the key issues facing us today, and how might this affect the future of the planet and its people?

an idea of the bias

Where are Greenpeace
Where are Friends of the Earth
Where are the Conservationists in this 'debate'
I've invited representatives from both organisations to speak at the conference. We are keen for the event to be a vibrant and genuine debate. Quote

- Yes apparently they have decided that there is "a correct message" already, I note they don't say "the truth", maybe they think thst is different from correct.

@Barry ... Not until June, well Stephen Lewandowsky needs the time to make up his evidence ..oops I mean research his evidence .. well proper evidence , not being his strong point ..which is rather 'dirty PR'
., Jeez the fact that his lot are't disowned by the science community shows the dismal state science has sunk to in the Anglo-world ..truly disgusting and unprofessional

The Great Global Warming Gold Rush Next Tuesday 25 March BBC Radio 4 11am

Justin Rowlatt meets entrepreneurs who believe there are business opportunities being created by climate change, and who are gambling that they can improve their profits by adapting to the new conditions

presented by "Justin Rowlatt" who ironically calls himself "Ethical Man" whilst at the same time hyping up the scare, giving airtime to every green nut, but blocks skeptics from the airwaves.
Think subsidies then reads their synopsis

The effects of climate change are creating new business opportunities around the world. Justin Rowlatt meets people who may profit from adapting to the world's changing climate.
- The most convincing evidence that someone really believes something is when they are willing to risk their own money on it. Businesses around the world are doing just that – betting that they can profit from the effects of climate change.
- Justin meets the entrepreneurs who believe there is money to be made from the world's changing climate.

Global Warming Monday being on Tuesday in fact says everything one needs to know about the phenomenon. By simple rules of induction it could in fact be Wednesday, Thursday some time in 2030, like the melted glaciers, Friday in mid 2300, like the melted glaciers (revised version) or a Saturday in 3200, when either the 2°C increase is finally breached or we enter another ice age. And, whichever it is, the science always told us it would happen.

The Precautionary Principle
Can we strike the balance between risk and reward?

London WC1: Charles Darwin House,

This event is part of the Society of Biology's Policy Lates series.
The precautionary principle is often described as a “better safe than sorry” approach when an action is suspected as harmful for humans or the environment, and the scientific evidence for safety is unclear.

It makes sense not to take a risk when we don’t have sufficient information, or when the action is not needed or potentially beneficial in other ways, but is this ever really the case? We face tough decisions over issues such as disease control and food security, and sound science needs to inform decision-making.

Striking a balance between protecting people and the planet while maximising scientific and economic output isn’t easy, nor is communicating these issues. The Precautionary Principle is supposed to help – how can we ensure that it does?

I have a vision of the panel appearing from behind a curtain and shouting "April Fool!" One they've cooked up for 20 years or more.

More details of the event on 12th April that stew started the thread with:

11am Dr Mayer Hillman. Senior Fellow Emeritus, Policy Studies Institute, London. What do we do now that society is demonstrating all too clearly its strong preference for downplaying the significance and implications of climate change?

12.00 Dr Rupert Read. Philosopher and Green activist. Rupert will speak about global over-heat, the end of denialism, and the self-destruction of libertarianism in relation to this issue - and a possible way forward, in terms of guardians for future people.

(Lunch)

1.45 Dr Vicky Pope. The Met Office. Vicky was a founding member of the Met Office Hadley Centre and is a member of the Advisory Board on the UNEP early warning project on climate related hazards. She will present an overview of the latest science from the IPCC report and talk about its relevance for the UK. Vicky will give some idea of weather extremes we might expect.

2.45 Saci Lloyd is an Ecological activist and internationally-acclaimed writer. She is the author of Carbon Diaries.

Is this a wise tactic of Vicky Pope, to sandwich herself between a 'green activist' and an 'ecological activist'? Rupert Read, people may recall, is the UEA guy who was told off by Mike Hulme for "Sexing-up evidence" (climategate email 3895.txt).

Online Hiatus Conference .. Youtube

20 March, at 3 PM GMT/11 AM EDT. THURSDAY
by Warming Slowdown Journal Club @ Nature Climate Change and Nature Geoscience (magazines of the We are not always Wrong publishing group)

We’ll be taking questions posted here or using the hashtag #NPGjclub on Twitter. Get started now, and ask away all the way through the live event.
The Google plus link they give for debate

The rate at which the Earth’s atmosphere is warming has slowed in recent years. The reasons presented for this so-called slowdown or #hiatus are varied, and communicating the complexity of this particular avenue of climate science is particularly challenging.

A joint web focus between Nature Climate Change and Nature Geoscience presents original research and opinion pieces on the science and social dimensions surround the warming slowdown

Join us as +Alicia Newton of Nature Geoscience discusses the science and communication of #climatechange over the past two decades with +Lisa Goddard of Columbia University's International Research Institute for Climate and Society, +Karen Akerlof of George Mason University, and +Ed Hawkins of the University of Reading on 20 March, at 3 PM GMT/11 AM EDT. copied from their Facebook event page

Climate change communication - success or failure?

Professor Sir Mark Walport, Government Chief Scientific Adviser

About the lecture
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/walker-institute-annual-lecture-2014-registration-11185459009?ref=estw

Do you think the communication of climate change science is a success story? The majority of the public in the UK and elsewhere acknowledge that climate change is happening, but at the same time climate scepticism and apathy seem to be on the rise. Too often we still see climate change portrayed in a polarised way: doom-laden, alarmist statements on one hand versus scepticism and denial on the other. This might make good entertainment, but it certainly does not reflect the balance of scientific understanding.

People place greater trust in climate scientists than in any other source of information on climate change and this puts them in a unique, but responsible, position. In this lecture Sir Mark will discuss whether efforts to communicate climate change to the public need to be stepped-up. What exactly is climate change communication, what is it trying to achieve, who should do it and how? How effective is traditional media, such as TV and newspapers, in communicating climate science? What future for citizen science-type projects and the use of social media - noise or unique communication opportunity?

Thanks Barry

Why at the University of Reading’s Walker Institute for Climate System Research?

Why is there a need to try and persuade people to believe things that they already believe?
