Discussion > Last chance to save the planet - Earth day groundhog day

Apparently it's Earth Day today. It also appears to be Groundhog day.
BBC Environment Correspondent Helen Briggs tells us that this year's Paris conference is the
'last chance' for action.
This is reminiscent of the various pronouncements in 2009 that
Copenhagen climate change talks are last chance.
Back in 1992 Fred Pearce wrote of the Rio Earth Summit as
Last chance to save the planet?.
More examples welcome....

There are many examples on http://climatechangepredictions.org/category/doomsday some of which are hysterical and not in the funny sense. I'm dumbfounded how journalist who print this guff do not go back and say "hang on, that didn't happen" once the prophesy reaches its deadline. People really do believe what they read and hear in the press. The persecution of science will continue for some years yet I fear

Something I didn't know until I heard Mark Steyn on the radio yesterday: Earth Day founder composted his girlfriend.

michael hart, without reading the article I'm hoping she was dead first?

Yes, TinyCO2. As I understood it, the article says he murdered her.

Donk! Sound of jaw hitting floor. I thought it was just some hippy burial practice. Just goes to show that greens can be weirder than anything you can imagine.

Not directly in the 'we only have n years within which to act' theme, but highly relevant to that previous phase of 'we have to save the world' junk science and the irresponsible mass media collaboration of the 1970s: http://www.c3headlines.com/2015/04/those-stubborn-facts-1970s-extreme-weather-severe-disasters-scientists-predicting-climate-change-global-cooling.html

What have we learned since then in order to be a little smarter about such intemperate and ill-founded excursions? In the scientific world, little or nothing it would seem. In the political one, on the other hand, we have learned a great deal about how to be even more effective with PR and scaremongering about 'the environment'. The IPCC itself, and destructive legislation such as the Climate Change Act are some of the associated results, and they have also been staging posts for further excursions into depravity.

The similarity between climate doom hustlers and fundamentalist religious hustlers is notable.Particularly when it comes to prophecy/predictions of doom.

hunter, on the religious theme, here's the Papal Pontification on the last chance to repent of our sins, for the end of the world is nigh:

"The world should take note that the climate summit in Paris later this year (COP21) may be the last effective opportunity to negotiate arrangements that keep human-induced warming below 2-degrees C"
