Discussion > CAGW Alarmism on The Sky At Night

The BBC's Sky At Night this week was about Venus and contained some pretty extreme CAGW alarmism.

Apparently the reason Venus is so hot and horrid is all due to a run-away CO2 greenhouse gas effect just like wot's happening on Earth.  Nothing to do with Venus being 26 million miles closer to the Sun than we are. Nothing to do with Venus having no magnetic field to protect it from the Solar Wind. Nothing to do with Venus taking 243 Earth days to rotate once, meaning one side of the planet bakes continuously. Nothing to do with Venus having 93x the atmospheric pressure of Earth.

Hugo Lambert "a climate change expert" from Exeter popped up to tell us he predicts the surface of the Earth will be "perhaps 10°C warmer than it is now by 2100". But don't worry - he tells us a Venus-like fate is still a few hundred years off in the future.

That sound you can hear in the background is Patrick Moore turning in his grave.

Patrick Moore, for whom no accolade is high enough, other than to be referred to as, “Patrick Moore”… but – turning?! He will be positively spinning! Don’t blame fracking for the tremors, it is the great scientists of the past who are also spinning at the corruption of their precious legacy.

His replacement in that illustrious programme is but a poor imitation – whatever happened to Heather Couper? Surely a more suitable person to take on Patrick Moore’s mantle, is she not?

Venus also has an opposite axial rotation to that of all the other planets does Hugo Lambert predict that for us?

I believe that someone, a blogger, has looked at the temperature of Venus at 1 bar and found it to be the "same" taking into consideration its distance from the Sun as that of the Earth.

The climate kooks seem to regularly revisit promising sources of climate fear like nomads grazing land or Vikings raiding a nice vulnerable coastal village. That basically every source of cliamte fear turns out to be based on misrepresentation, distortion or outright falsehood makes no difference,
That Venus is still used not only as a comparison but a fearful prophecy for Earth would be astonishing if it was the only false idea the climate apocalypse promoters used. Instead misrepresenting Venus is only one of a long list of false ideas the climate kooks regularly revisit.

I put this on Unthreaded. I add it here for completeness as it may have been seen and influenced later comments, knowingly or unknowingly.

BBC4 at 10 pm on Sunday 10th May 2015. They are talking about Venus.
They admit that the runaway warming won't happen here on Earth due to man's impact.
Only warming of 10°C by 2100 is expected.

And the Sky at Night is the pinnacle of BBC science programming. (Sigh).
