There's always Gordon Brown's "50 days to save the planet". He was speaking metaphorically, though, I think. He meant that the 50 days of whatever huge hypocritical climate jamboree was taking place at the time.

The 'urgency' meme is an important one in various social memeplexes. It helps suppress our reason (if one believes the urgency meme, it means there isn't time to think things through properly, one should just act), and so assists other culturally aggressive memes in getting through our defenses to hit our emotional hot-buttons.

Extremist political movements often stress urgency, as do religions (e.g. "the great majority of Catholics - as their priests saw it - were in urgent need of confession", from 'Catholics and Contraception : An American History').

I wish at the end of these periods they would say; ok it's too late now, lets forget carbon taxes and decarbonising the economy. It's too late. We'll just have to mitigate as and when required.

Here's a slightly unusual one reported at WUWT in early 2009. Unusual not because it contains reports of James Hansen predicting the end of the world, but because it's four years instead of the more common multiples of five, ten, fifteen or twenty. I guess that is because he directing it at Barrack Obama and presidential planetary cycles are of four years duration.

Also notable because it is about the other Pope (Met Office Vicky) telling Guardian readers that people should lay off the alarmism a bit. Credit where credit is due. They can't say we're always nasty to them.

Califonia Congressman Jared Huffman now has just a year left before a review is due for his 2006 statement:

"I think, without hyperbole, we may have 10 years to save the planet."

Without hyperbole, Go Jared.

The clock is also ticking for Bill McGuire, author of "Seven Years to Save the Planet: The Questions and Answers (2008)" As of today, according to the Amazon date of publication, he has only one month and eight days left before we are granted merciful release.

Those concerned about the world not ending need not worry, however. His website informs us that the BBC graciously hosts Bill's quarterly doomwatch update. I am not making this up:

The Arctic Emergency Methane Group have been predicting the end of the world for a while now. In 2012 they were sure the Actic summer ice would be gone by 2015. In their latest version it's been pushed back to next year. Curiously they've mananged to change the exponential downward trend by one year but instead of adding the real data they've managed to lose a year, thereby hiding the entire recorvery (short term or not). Isn't it funny how these people can create reams of alarmist literature but can't find the latest data?

There is a wonderful website whose purpose is to catalog the many, many failed predictions of doom that our CO2 obsessed friends have made over the years.

My favorite section of the website is called "doomsday".
What is fascinating to me is how the CO2 obsessed fall for climate doom stories the way an evangelical fundamentalist falls for stories about the rapture.
