Discussion > EXPOSURE - the only weapon to inversions of the truth
Another view from outside the 'Climate Change' bubble':
Leaving The Left [and the Guardian!] - Melanie Phillips
"They [the Left] simply use abuse, gratuitous abuse, and the purpose of the abuse is to shut down the argument. It is to bully the person that they are disagreeing with, and more important than that is to tell other people, "This person, don't go there, don't even listen to what she's saying, she's really dangerous, she's really horrible, she is really of no account at all, so you can't actually have a discussion on the Left
...
The idea of truth has been replaced by ideology.
...
The evidence has to be wrenched to fit [the ideology]."

An hour and a quarter of Charlotte Iserbyt's life story, which includes how to 'educate' children and destroy free will, and truth doesn't come into it:

Can somebody identify an "inversion of the truth" that is relevant to the climate debate?
That's a very interesting interview, RC. I never realised that Melanie Philips use to be a Guardian writer before she saw the light.
Diana West is a US journalist and wanted to write a book chronicling the recent impact of Islam on the Western mind. She ended up writing about the revelations she found out about the events that followed the normalising relations between the USA and the USSR, on Nov 16th 1933, including Mccarthyism and the probable lengthening of WWII.
It is a story of lies, pretence, treachery, US self delusion and the repeated behaviour of those wanting to conceal the truth.
It is easy to see similarities with this and how Climate Change Activists have behaved towards efforts to understand reality by true Scientists and their supporters. In her book 'American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character', page 336, Diana West quotes 'The Great Terror: A Reassessment', by Robert Conquest, Jan 2008, page 463:
"Not even high intelligence and a sensitive spirit are of any help once the facts of a situation are deduced from political theory, rather than vice versa."
I think this is the nub of our problem. As Scientists, we engage our 'high intelligence and a sensitive spirit' :) and hit a brick wall, whether it is at a conference or down the pub. The opposition just keeps on digging into their political agenda and, as Scientists, we keep re-engaging when confronted with their new arguments, and getting worn down.
For those who prefer a short video to reading the book, there is this to watch (27 minutes long), and is mostly about US government policy between 1930-1995:

While Diana West's story is different to ours, her comments about her confusion when confronted by 'inversions of the truth' are similar, and seeing the amount of pretence present, it helps us imagine that it could happen again!
