Discussion > Name the new UK Polar Ice Breaker
My entry has STILL yet to appear on the official list
RRS Cli-Tanic
This name is a combination of Climate and Titanic.
Climate : to remind us that the main drive for the funding for this vessel is so that it can be used in Climate Change 'Research'.
Titanic : Firstly to remind us of this nation's history of grandiose gestures as we seek to rush ahead, whilst other nations take more care. And secondly to remind us to have skepticism, when pioneers say "our ideas are certain, and don't need to be challenged".

Thanks for the link to the BBC "icebreaker" story. Really a research vessel with limited ice breaking capability, as you'd expect. From the BBC got a link to a suggest a name site nameourship.nerc.ac.uk/submit-a-name.html
I went with Hubert Lamb (...It hasn't appeared yet either)

John Shade suggests : RRS Fashion Victim
We could go with all kinds of Ironic Names
: RRS Sir Edward Davey, ... RRS Chris Huhne ... RRS Green Pounder, RRS Subsidy & Leggett
: Whats his name the Ice - Predictor man ? : RRS Peter "still wrong" Wadhams
Maybe you can sneak some names past the moderation police on NERCs site
They've allowed MILUTIN MILANKOVIĆ
"Milankovics theory about orbital cyclicity underpins much of what we know about climate change and climate science.
RRS Lest we not forget
De'Caprio's Folly
RRS Grant Seeker
My suggestion was: RSS Korttajarvi Sediments
Reason: To serve as a reminder to scientists that, as with their boats, they should not use their data upside down.
Trending on Twitter : @NERCscience #nameourship
So if your name is banned you can share it with that hashtag
RRS Data Adjusting
RRS Fiddling
RRS GreenCeleb Taxi, RRS GreenCeleb Cruises
RRS Brigstocks Folly
Mums Going to Iceland
RRS DavidAttenborough already has 149 votes!
Seriously things should not be named after living or recently dead persons especially politicians, cos it encourages corruption etc....RRS BBC & Saville
but hint for Progressive Socialists ..find the name of a BME + female + scientist and you'll stand a good chance of winning
"Status Quo" -repetitive pounding is still required
"Invisible" -an invisible ice breaker is necessary to break invisible ice
"I can't believe it's not a Cruise Ship!"
"Smasher" - a tribute to AGW Theory
"Endurance" - a tribute to sea ice
If it has a HeliPad, it is wonderful that Penguins and Polar Bears can enjoy the delights of air travel, though not necessarily at the same time.
"Enterprise" to boldly go splitting ice, where ice has been boldly split before
"Victory", common sense defeats dogma
"Rescuer" a tribute to stranded sea ice experts. Alternatively the "Peter Wadham"
"Ed Miliband" - in recognition of everything he has done to ensure sea ice survival.
"The Guardian" - in recognition of everything they have done to ensure sea ice survival
"Peak Ice" - in recognition of The Guardian's attention to accuracy and detail about sea ice
"Twin Peaks - in recognition of The Guardian's understanding of what the Arctica landscape will look like when the polar bears and ice are all gone.
"DAMN Ice BUSTER"

When I came up with a whmsical name of Holes in AGW you have to take into account that the ship's name is prefixed with RRS .......
Harry Passfield, noted.
RRS Souls in Peril
RRS No Questions
RRS King Question of AGW
RRS Sing About
Will the new ship be used for delivering fridges and freezers to Eskimos, or has demand tailed off? It is just one of those questions that has always been raised, but never answered.
@ssat Your name was accepted (at first)
Then one of the British Antarctic Survey zoologists angrily tweeted
Alastair Wilson
@NERCscience @BAS_News thought you were checking the entries, "rrs brass monkeys" really? #NameOurShip
Quite right to object: can't use a plural for a boat unless it is a catamaran and boat names are always upper case. Scandalous that some people are not taking this naming seriously.
:)
When I completed the form (twice as I have a .fr email which I rarely use so Mrs S had a submission too) I was asked for a reason for the suggested name and was told that I'd receive an email when the submission had been vetted.
In both cases I'm still waiting for the email and there are 521 submissions including some very strange names which seem to have been passed.
How about Penguin/Polar Bear Rescue (dependent on destination)?
Well my suggestion 30 hours later has just been de-censored ! (I'd made it early when the competition opened)
and I just got an email and a Cli-Tanic photo (reposted on Andrew Montford's FB page)
So there is hope for you @Sandy

Yes mine has got through, waiting for Mrs S's entry now.
Nearly 1600 submissions.

You've got a "like" from me, you also like your own post which will make two.
Their website seems to be in a death spiral.
You know the poles have melted so much, that there's hardly any ice left (sic)
...So we won't need to spend any money on ICEBREAKER research ships
... Well one side of the "Progressive Socialist Media Group" tells us we have a chance to name the UK's new Icrebreaker research ship
(they only mention it's an icebreaker in the old new story)
