Oh dear, Raff...if the global index (let us say the Mannian hockeystick), shows a flat trend while a regional index over the same period shows a rising trend, then how would you explain how the global index tends to a flat trend?

Arguing that temperatures are rising and the pause did not exist is difficult. Some people here are discussing very small changes in temperature, quoting ' the highest ever' etc.
As warmers do, lets dismiss the satellite record and look at the terrestrial record.

Which comprehensively show that the existing terrestrial network of temperature sensors is producing a rising trend.
By categorising weather stations using the approved WMO rules, only about 8% of stations were valid and they all produced a smaller or zero trend.
If the location of a monitoring station alters the 'global' climate record, then we should not really be talking about analysing climate records.
This should have put paid to the homogenisation work undertaken earlier.
We are guessing - really.
To give precision, resolution and statistical accuracy to climate measurements and predictions when the basic underlying recording mechanism is so doubtful then national bodies should call it a day.
Lets not forget our own major poor location award, the Heathrow weather station - surrounded by tarmac and concrete, gently blown by passing jet exhausts - but gives a guaranteed 'hotest day ever' recorded at Heathrow.
