The Maldive Islands are often used as case studies within research into the impacts of potential future sea level change. Therefore, if such studies are to be realistic, it is important that the past and future variations of sea level in the islands are understood as well as possible. That objective led a fieldwork team to the Maldives, and resulted in a conclusion that sea level in the islands fell by approximately 30 cm during the past few decades. In the present paper, the suggestion of such a fall has been examined from meteorological and oceanographic perspectives and found to be implausible. A number of met-ocean data sets and regional climate indices have been examined, at least one of which would have been expected to reflect a large sea level fall, without any supporting evidence being found. In particular, a suggestion that an increase in evaporation could have caused the fall has been demonstrated to be incorrect. Without any real evidence for a hitherto-unrecognised process which could lead to a sea level change as significant as that proposed by the fieldwork team, one concludes that a rise in sea level of approximately half a metre during the 21st century, as suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report, remains the most reliable scenario to employ in future studies of the islands.

The fieldwork team that produced the implausible data - including photos of rocks, yeah right -was, of course, Morner's.

To quote the chair of the Swedish Skeptics Society, if Nils-Axel Mörner is associated with a project, it's "a solid guarantee for high-grade woo."

Interesting that physical evidence in the form of fossil beachrocks that form at mean sealevel but are now high and dry (and for which photographic evidence exists) is dismissed whereas computer models of sea level rise are considered worthy. Evidence for a late Holocene sealevel fall is not confined to the Maldives, I have seen he same type of evidence in Western Australia.

Fantastic line of argument - can't explain something, physical evidence must be wrong, and interpretation that fits our bias (and for which we have NO physical evidence) must be right. Oh and by the way let's trash the name of the person who provided the physical evidence. He and his evidence must be suppressed.

Morner has done a pretty good job of trashing his own reputation

He’s called Nils-Axel Mörner, and among his claims to fame are that he possesses paranormal abilities to find water and metal using a dowsing rod, and that he has discovered “the Hong Kong of the Ancient Greeks in Sweden.

The celebrated debunker of mumbo-jumbo James Randi challenged Mörner to demonstrate his expertise with a dowsing rod, but he “consistently refused to be tested”. He did however, allow his paranormal abilities to be examined on Swedish television, using a test that Mörner himself devised: dowsing for a packet of sugar concealed under one of 10 cups. Needless to say, he failed, blaming, as such people so often do, “interference” and “influences”.

In 2007, Mörner and his collaborator, a homeopath and amateur archaeologist called Bob Lind, were reprimanded by the Scania County archaeologist in Sweden for damaging an Iron Age cemetery during their quest to demonstrate the “Bronze Age calendar alignments”, which would somehow help to show that this local graveyard was in fact an ancient Hellenic trading centre.

The Spectator’s Spectacular Blunder

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If someone maintains that he has overturned the entire canon of knowledge about global sea levels, derived from a massive database of readings from tidal gauges and satellites, he’d better have some powerful evidence for it, and he’d better publish it in the peer-reviewed scientific journals, where claims are assessed by people who know what they’re looking at.

But Nils-Axel Mörner’s evidence is close to nonexistent. He did publish a peer-reviewed article maintaining that sea levels in the Maldives are falling, back in 2004. But the ‘evidence’ it contained was anecdotal — a skeleton found on a reef, accounts of fishermen sailing over shallow rocks — and it was comprehensively debunked by two later articles in the same journal. They explained that his paper ‘contains a number of unqualified and unreferenced assertions’ and ignored a vast body of hard data — from tide gauges and satellites — in favour of unsubstantiated accounts. They found ‘no evidence for the fall in sea level at the Maldives as postulated by Mörner’ .

A question of faith

In reality, three tide gauges exist in the Maldives, whose outputs are all available online and can be inspected by the public via the UK-based scientific collaborative research effort the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level. One is in the south at Gan, which shows a clear and consistent rise since before 1990. A second is located at Hanimaadhoo in the north of the country, and shows no consistent trend from 1992. The third is at the capital Male’, and shows a strong upward trend from the early 1990s until 2009.

And what makes the weather? Why, our Sun, of course! When the Sun is in a warm phase the Earth is warmer; when the Sun moves into a cooler phase the Earth is cooler or even very cold. The Ice Ages happen during solar cool phases. We are currently living in an inter-glacial period. This sequence of events has been going on for millions of years and humans have managed to adapt nicely. Today, humans live on every part of the Earth except Antarctica. The Earth has been warmer in historic times and a whole lot colder too.

It has come to my attention that Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner gave presentations at the seminar on climate change organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences at the request of President Vladimir Putin earlier this month. Dr. Mörner attacked the science of climate change, while claiming that he is President of the Commission on Sea Level Change of INQUA (International Union for Quaternary Research).

I am writing to inform you that Dr. Mörner has misrepresented his position with INQUA. Dr. Mörner was President of the Commission on Sea Level Change until July 2003, but the commission was terminated at that time during a reorganization of the commission structure of INQUA. Dr. Mörner currently has no formal position in INQUA, and I am distressed that he continues to represent himself in his former capacity. Further, INQUA, which is an umbrella organization for hundreds of researchers knowledgeable about past climate, (INQUA) does not subscribe to Mörner’s position on climate change. Nearly all of these researchers agree that humans are modifying Earth’s climate, a position diametrically opposed to Dr. Mörner’s point of view.

Phil Clarke I do not know Nils-Axel Morner. My judgement of his work was (and is) based on reading information given within a posting that was liberally illustrated with annotated photographs. I saw no reason to question the veracity of his observations or the appropriateness of his conclusions. As I have written earlier, his interpretation is consistent with evidence from Western Australia. This evidence consists of more than fifty beach ridges (the oldest, furthest from the sea, occurring at higher elevations than the currently forming beach ridge) at the southern edge of Hamblin Pool in Shark Bay. Since this part of Australia is geologically stable, this evidence can only be interpreted as reflecting a progressive sea level drop of about 0.5m during the later part of the Holocene. Thus there exists evidence in Australia for a sea level fall in the Indian Ocean similar in magnitude with that determined for the Maldives.

I don't care what N-AM has got up to, I rely on my own eyes. In the Maldives I know that naturally occurring erosion (not associated with sealevel change) has been deliberately used to imply sea level rise.

Storms.

This study provides the first long-term tropical cyclone record from the Indian Ocean region. Multiple shore parallel ridges composed entirely of one species of marine cockle shell (Fragum eragatum) standing between 3 and 6 m above mean sea level occur at Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia. The ridges record a tropical cyclone history between approximately 500 cal BP and 6000–7000 cal BP. Numerical storm surge and shallow water wave modelling techniques have been applied to determine the intensity (central pressure with uncertainty margins) of the storms responsible for deposition of the ridges, which has occurred approximately every 190–270 years. The ridges also record a 1700 year gap in tropical cyclone activity, between approximately 5400 cal BP and 3700 cal BP, where ridges deposited prior to this time were buried by a substantial deposit of aeolian fine-grained terrestrial sediment

So the Shark Bat beach ridges are a proxy for tropical storms, rather than sea level.

There was a drop in sea level in the mid holocene, but this is not what people dispute about Morner's claims: it is his denial of the evidence for modern SLR that people find ridiculous (alongside all the other fruitloopery and dishonesty).

Phil Clark. They could be both. Either that or you have also to accept the the oldest and highest beach ridges formed from much stronger storms that piled the shells higher. You must also accept that successive ridge-building storms got progressively weeker. Occam's razor.

Other evidence from Shark Bay that I have seen. The world famous stromatolites that occur in the intertidal zone have subtidal equivalents. The intertidal examples are now interpreted as relics, formed originally in slightly deeper water that have been exposed as a result of a sea level fall.
