The circular economy: a climate change solution?

With 97% of climate scientists in firm agreement that we are facing a climate change crisis
(Yes they really fing said that on a Cambridge Uni website !)

there is a need for new solutions that help us reduce carbon emissions rapidly. The linear economy, characterised by our “buy it – use it – trash it” approach to goods is unsustainable. The circular economy is one potential carbon reduction and waste prevention solution gaining momentum and Cambridge is at the vanguard of this change through Circular Cambridge, a festival that celebrates progressive ways to design, manufacture, access, repair and reuse the things that we want and need in our lives.

This interactive workshop will explore the positives and negatives of the linear and circular economies, looking at how the circular economy might apply to our own lives and communities, and how it might help us overcome difficulties in addressing the climate change challenge.

Tackling climate change: whose responsibility is it

As we see ever more clearly the consequences of climate change, whose responsibility is it to tackle it? A panel of experts from the University of Cambridge, the British Antarctic Survey and Friends of the Earth discuss whether it is down to individuals, companies, or nations - or all three.

Prof Simon Redfern, Department of Earth Sciences and Jesus College; Craig Bennett, CEO of Friends of the Earth; and Dr Emily Shuckburgh, British Antarctic Survey, will discuss the issues in a panel event chaired by Dr Julian Huppert, Jesus College.
