Discussion > ‘Little Ice Age’ Cooling On The Way

It has always struck me that there are bound to be lots of influences on our climate, some of which we may understand, and probably others of which we are blissfully unaware. The sun, self-evidently, has to have quite an effect.

I have no idea whether or not the papers suggesting forthcoming cooling are correct, but I am confident of two things:

1. I am more worried about cooling than warming;

2. You are unlikely to hear/see/read much about warnings of potential cooling at the BBC in the near future.

Could not agree more with your two points, Mr Hodgson, as well as with your observation about the Sun. I would rather have years without winters than years without summers; however, there are a surprising number of people who think that the former is a better idea, to judge by their (artificial?) fear of warming. No-one has yet informed me as to what they consider to be the perfect global climate/temperature; all they insist on is that where we are heading is to our dooooom!

Presumably the solution to Global Cooling is to burn coal.

Luckily the UK has enough to avoid catastrophe.

It only needs a slight tweak to the Climate Change Act for us to lead the world by example.

Based on the last 40-45 years, Climate Scientists will adapt to changes in funding to justify unnecessary panic, and more funding

William M Connolley of Hockey Teamster notoriety, spent a lot of someone else's money trying to remove the last ice age scare from the records. Now he will have to reinstate it all, so that Mann can claim he was right all along.

Climate Scientists will deny they ever said anything about Global Warming at all, and blame it on fake news invented by Trump.

Applying the Precautionary Principle, so beloved of Climate Scientists, Trump should make it compulsory for US school children to be indoctrinated from an early age, about the evil and corrupting legacy of Climate Scientists, and why they should never, ever, be trusted again.

The British should be encouraged to revert to the traditional behaviour pattern of always complaining that the weather is never as nice or predictable after teatime, as it used to be, when they were younger, and blaming weather forecasters for Wimbledon being "snowed-off", and Southern Train Services being disrupted by glaciers on the line.

The planet will do what it wants. But...

... if you are a true environmentalist global cooling will create the real global, coordinated initiative to create viable, dependable and reliable forms of energy creation.

Global cooling would be no joke. Supplying the energy requirements for a cooling planet would require forward planning and investments on the grandest of scales.

Cold scares people. Reaches deep in the psyche. To remove a reliance on bringing stuff from under the ground, Global Cooling is the answer. Current renewables are just people gaming the political system to make a quick buck.

Global Cooling is the environmental path to promote not warming.

oh sorry... I forgot, a warming planet is a scientific fact, how could I be so cynical?

There is a vast quantity of evidence that in cooler weather and climates, burning coal to keep warm is very beneficial. It also provides energy that can be used in many different ways.

There is no evidence that burning coal has any effect on the the planet's average temperature, so we might as well get on with it.

When will the Government bite the bullet and declare that the country needs a credible energy policy? It has an opportunity here to at least unsettle the 'settled Science':
Independent: UK Government given 21 days to explain climate change failures or face legal action

It is not as though the world has followed us, in putting into law, unobtainable (or at least uneconomic) and idiotic environmental targets. We don't need to save the World, just our environment (and our infrastructure).

RC: When I saw the link you posted I briefly thought, in optimistic mode, that someone was threatening to sue the Government over the catastrophic energy policies that have been inflicted on us because of climate change nonsense. I should have known better, especially as the link was to the Independent.

If sense prevails, the answer will be to repeal the CCA, then there will be no possibility of a case against the Government for failing to comply with the CCA. It will be a lot cheaper than fighting a Court case, and a lot better for the country.

There is, of course, the question of how Global Warming causes Global Cooling to be answered.

Can we have that before the fact please?

I think more than 50% of the UK population would agree with you!

Ed Miliband delegated the drafting of the CCA to Bryony Worthington. Her Wikipedia entry includes the following:

"Lady Worthington was the lead author in the team which drafted the UK's 2008 Climate Change Act.[9] This landmark piece of legislation, which requires the UK to reduce its carbon emissions to a level 80% lower than its emissions in 1990. At the time Worthington was working with Friends of the Earth working on their Big Ask campaign, but was seconded to government to help design the legislation.

Sandbag

Lady Worthington launched Sandbag in 2008[10] to raise public awareness of and improve the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Initially Sandbag provided members of the public with a way of tackling climate change, enabling them to buy ETS permits and cancel them, meaning that European companies covered by the ETS would have to emit fewer greenhouse gasses. Since that time, Sandbag has changed and grown. With a general remit to 'defend against climate risk',[11] Sandbag now focuses on researching and suggesting improvements to the ETS, how to phase out coal-fired power stations in Europe, and how governments and the EU can work to support Carbon Capture and Storage. Lady Worthington has been Sandbag's Director since its foundation.[12]"

As the UK CCA was used as a basis for EU Legislation, can we scrap the Friends of the Earth UK Law, before we unbind ourselves from the Friends of the Earth EU Laws?

From a Legal point of view, is "Carbon Capture and Storage", imprisonment without trial or evidence?
