With most discussions on this topic, we usually we hear one side, usually the 'Establishment', then part of the other side if we are lucky, using different terminology, from different perspectives, and it's never presented in a chronological order. We then have to reassemble the information to make sense of it.
Here Haidt presents a description of why the backlash occurred, as an observer, using consistent language and, I think, making a good attempt to describe each stage even though they are at opposite ends of the argument (with him at one end :) see below)

Haidt said he had moved from the Left, in childhood :) , to liberal, but it did look like a Lib-Dem event, and I did think, in his heart, he is nearer Clegg than Gladstone :) . Because of that, I didn't judge him too harshly: I thought, in spite of that, he did give a fair presentation (best out of the one I have seen) and he did end with the observation that most can see their communities at breaking point.

I actually had the answer to this question some time back. It is that serfs rise up against those that have positions awarded them by one patronage or another and then work only to preserve those positions. Whether that is being a trustafarian (The Guardian), tenured at a university, a mandarin or a quango gravy train guard.
Hence observations such as "I think people have had enough of experts from organisations with acronyms saying they know what is best and getting it consistently wrong." which recently and memorably defined those 'elites'.
Take Back Control, (whoever coined it peace be upon her), was the perfect concept at the right time. The perfect antidote to the moralising Left (97% these days:) rather than the caring left.

This is Camille Paglia discussing her latest book: "Free Women, Free Men: Sex, Gender, Feminism" but I found it more of a potpourri of observations in keeping with what I consider common sense, which is surprising considering how she describes herself. I think her thoughts are a reminder of what the media have discarded and 'must be forgotten' by the sane:

What she says may be obvious to ssat, and it is a bit random, but I haven't heard so many grounded observations for some time, in part because it is so discouraged. Few answers, but some hope that the right questions may be asked.
