Yet more scamsters pillaging the Grenfell disaster

May 31, 2018 at 1:10 AM | Registered Commentertomo

tomo, it is reassuring to know that these Court Cases for fraud, deception etc are continuing, whilst the Official Inquiry has been able to hear the traumatic accounts of survivors, relatives and even some of the people who died.

Fraudsters accounted for much of the delay in confirming the true death toll. Why were these fraudsters able to carry on for 8 months?

I see that some more people who should know better (imho) have decided to exploit the Grenfell fire.

Schoolchildren across Britain are being asked to mark the first anniversary of the country’s worst postwar fire by wearing “green for Grenfell” and helping a local cause or project

The Sunday Times article is obviously paywalled but given the amount of money already hosed into the disaster tin rattling charity efforts look rather dodgy...

“We hope schools and communities will get behind it and that it will bring good to people around the country. Simple acts of communities coming together — planting trees or holding a coffee morning — that is what Green for Grenfell Day is all about.”

The event will take place on June 15, the day after the anniversary. Participants are being urged to post activities on social media with a #GreenForGrenfellDay hashtag.

June 14 will be a more contemplative day, with a national minute’s silence taking place at noon. In the evening survivors and bereaved families will take part in a “silent march” to remember the dead and seek justice. It will be followed by an Islamic feast, or “iftar” meal, to break the fast for those observing Ramadan.

The irony that "Green" was a contributing factor in the deaths of 72 people seems to have entirely passed them by.....

The experts' reports highlighted:

Most of the fire doors at the entrance to the 120 flats had been replaced in 2011 but neither they or the original doors still left in place complied with fire test evidence

The lifts failed to perform effectively, hindering the transportation of firefighting equipment and creating an "unnecessary risk" to residents who could not use it to escape

The fire service had to pump its own water into Grenfell Tower - the building's "dry fire main" system was "non-compliant" with guidance at the time of construction and is "non-compliant with current standards"

The smoke control system did not operate correctly, reducing the ability to improve both escape and firefighting conditions

A lack of regulations requiring a central alarm system in residential buildings such as Grenfell Tower

Existing building guidelines and tests allow "obvious dangers" to be incorporated into cladding systems routinely

An "architecture crown" fitting at the top of the tower caught alight and fell down, allowing the fire to move around the tower not just up

Still no mention of cough....

tomo,

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jun/05/dangerous-building-works-turned-grenfell-tower-death-trap-inquiry

"Grenfell Tower was turned into a “death trap” by a dangerous and reprehensible refurbishment carried out by Kensington and Chelsea council and the local tenant management organisation (TMO), the inquiry into the fire has been told.

The accusation came as commercial firms responsible for the work came under pressure to end their effective silence and participate more actively in the investigation."

ALL those involved with design and construction, including the "Client", have been told to keep quiet, to avoid admitting anything that may constitute an admission of any liability at all. So far, none have given any evidence that has been made public, apart from saying that they were relying on something that someone else had relied on.

UaT. By your reference to the renegade Somerlet (source of the Ironlands of Game of Thrones?) do you preach rebellion 'gainst fair Nicola (first lord of Riaghaltas na h-Alba)? Remember he was slain by Scottish hands and is now mistaken for a typing error.

Sorry last post severely misplaced.

Sunday Times : summarises the LRB article that got beneath relentless hijacking/weaponising of Grenfell for political reasons.

\\ epitomised very early on when a BBC reporter asked a local 'how ANGRY are you?
Not 'how are you' or 'are you actually a resident?' //

Political opportunism at it's very worst.
\\ No, the residents didn’t feel neglected at Grenfell; they enjoyed living in one of the most exciting parts of London.
It was the Grenfell Action Group that “hated” the council and carped about everything including fire risks (but never mentioned the cladding //

\\ council employees — pulled out all the stops to help.
You just wouldn’t know it. //

\\ “Yo Theresa May,” Stormzy rapped to cheers at the Brit awards. “Where’s the money for Grenfell?” As a matter of record, nearly £25m was raised in donations to various charities last year; by May this year, nearly £24m of it had been distributed to survivors and next of kin. But who’s counting? //
etc,

\\ The two words that caused the disaster were not “stay put” but “environmental sciences”.

The fire started in a fridge. Fridges had a near-zero-flammability coolant until this lobby convinced the world it was destroying the ozone layer. They also had insulation that was less efficient but not flammable. This was dropped in favour of energy efficiency, with no mention of the fire risk.

The fire spread through insulating panels. These had been installed to meet targets for energy usage.

Unnecessary deaths have resulted from the actions of the climate change lobby.

"The fire room control manager who chose to abandon the "stay put" policy during the Grenfell fire said it was the first time such a decision had been made.

★The "stay-put" advice to residents was in place until 02:47 BST - nearly two hours after the fire started.★

But Jo Smith told an inquiry it was altered within 15 minutes of her arrival at the control room.

She said information being fed to her led her to believe residents "had no way of waiting to be rescued".

A "stay put" policy is based on the theory that buildings can be designed to prevent fire spreading, so a blaze in one flat should not be able to spread to another.

But expert reports submitted to the inquiry suggest that since 1974, major changes to Grenfell Tower destroyed that protection."

Looks like they're going to struggle a bit with "nobody's to blame, lessons have been learnt".

Having been up and down the Westway quite a lot over the last couple of months - the re-cladding with white plastic sheets topped off with a grey section on which there's a GREEN heart and some sentimental verbiage looks like mawkishness on a grand scale as well as imho tone deaf.

There was a certain inevitability that the council would be further embarrassed

" ........has me wondering who the effing scammers are..... "

Sep 21, 2018 at 8:19 PM | tomo

Amongst the chaos, carnage, tragedy, sympathy and intense media interest, it is understandable that mistakes were made in rehousing scammers for a week or two. How many were rumbled then, and turfed out, without criminal prosecution?

Sep 22, 2018 at 12:48 AM | Unregistered Commentergolf charlie

Story originates from the Mail
He was found guilty ..the delay is before sentencing
\\ He later changed his story to say he was homeless and sleeping in the stairwell of the 11th and 12th floor.//
so does a psychology report seem quite sensible if that's the case?

\\ An illegal immigrant swindled £60,000 for hotel and food bills by claiming he was a victim of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Tunisian Abdelkarim Rekaya, 28, took advantage of the government’s policy of providing amnesty for illegal immigrants living in the gutted tower block in June last year. //

\\ As of August 2018, twelve people have been charged with fraud offences relating to Grenfell, with five people put behind bars. //
As @GC pointed out the initial number of fraudsters who tried could be dozens, cos we don't know how many the council officers filtered out before prosecution.

there is quite a difference between living in a flat and sleeping on a stairwell. A cynic might say he's trying to maintain his connection to the incident but diluting the amount of proof required to prove his connection.

A psychologist's report isn't a psychiatrist's report where mental illness would be scoped out and any MH condition deployed as an exculpatory factor in proceedings / sentencing. In other words - is he mentally ill? - that question should have been resolved before sentencing.

I just see the hangers on in the judicial system dining out on extended process - hence my comment on who's scamming who?

Blimey ...

This business just keeps on throwing up stuff

More scammers wander through the courts - seems like one a month at the moment - somebody's likely keeping count.

Talking about keeping a count - 150 families still have no homes after Grenfell Fire - erm .... whut? - there were only 120 flats FFS

Nov 4, 2018 at 12:12 PM | Registered Commentertomo

tomo,

by now, it should be possible to determine:

a) how many individuals/families were legally able to declare Grenfell Tower as their home, ie the place where they lived, with a Tenancy Agreement

b) how many lived in Grenfell, and regarded it as their home, but had no legal Tenancy Agreement

c) how many claimed to live in Grenfell, with or without a Tenancy Agreement, but didn't.

Those who actually lived in Grenfell Tower whether they had any Legal entitlement to or not, WERE made Homeless by the Fire. If HMG has said those made Homeless will be rehoused with costs initially falling to HMG, then the numbers will never match perfectly.

The fact that the numbers are so far from matching, does suggest that some flats in this multiple occupancy building were themselves in multiple occupancy. If so, how much rent was being paid to, or claimed by some of the Legal Tenants/Sub Tenants? How many Central/Local Government funded Agencies were aware, but deliberately ignoring the multiple occupancy of single flats?

gc

quite :-) - and by inference what's going on in the rest of London's public housing stock?

Nov 5, 2018 at 10:03 AM | Registered Commentertomo

tomo, you open up a box of sardine tins, and each crammed tin is full of more cans of worms.

ALL politicians that have tried to take advantage of this tragedy, have ended up exposing themselves and their Parties to ridicule and accusations.

The Police and Legal system came in for so much criticism for the delays in confirming the number of deaths, and subsequently the identities of the victims.

Many politicians and those on the Central/Local Government Payroll knew that their incompetence, lack of due diligence and enthusiam for London's Housing Crisis, was to blame for adding to the tragedy.

At some point, an investigative reporter should compile a Spreadsheet listing the Flats by Number, with the details of the holder of the Legal Tenancy Agreement with KCTMO. That is Columns 1 and 2 sorted, and the Police and Fire and Rescue Services should have had that information supplied to them by KCMTO with the click of a mouse.

Column 3. Was the Legal Tenant ACTUALLY living there? Yes or No? If No, go to Column 4

Column 4. Who was actually living there?

Column 5 Did KCTMO know about the sub let of the flat?

Column 5 Who did know about the Sub Let,i n any capacity in a position of Authority?

Column 6 Were Benefits, Housing etc being paid by Govt Agencies to support any Sub Tenancy?

The list of Columns could go on and on. But do the same Names, Agents and Govt Agencies keep cropping up?

How much UK Taxpayer money was being paid to the occupants of each flat?

If you want a Political Angle, how many people in Grenfell Tower were registered to Vote, and how many had requested a Postal Vote?

Tomo : fraud conviction count : Dave AFCB @Blobmouse1 Nov 6
And now we have No16. Sharife Elouahab #Grenfell

Sharife Elouahab. The BBC reports it here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-46109333
"Elouahabi received support worth about £103,476 for accommodation and financial assistance between 23 June 2017 and 25 June 2018, the Metropolitan Police said."

The Irish News has something the BBC don't
http://www.irishnews.com/news/uknews/2018/11/07/news/fraudsters-tried-to-claim-more-than-600-000-meant-for-survivors-of-grenfell-disaster-1479094/

●So far, 13 people have been convicted in separate cases, with a total of more than £630,000 in bogus claims for money that was meant for those whose lives had been devastated.●

I don't know whether this was all Government funding, or included Charitable Donations.
Elouabi had £100,000 in 12 months, so if the other 12 "only" had £500,000 in about the same time period, he may have been exceptional.

These FRAUDSTERS do offer some ballpark guesstimates of the monthly spend on those genuinely made Homeless by this tragedy.
