A question for Liberal Democrats
Apr 20, 2007 Civil liberties
If, when faced with an oppressive law introduced by the UK government, the correct response is to get rid of said government, why is the correct response to oppressive EU directives to try to persuade them to become more liberal?
Better off out, surely?

The solution is not withdrawal. It is to vote out those Euro-parliamentarians that supported the illiberal law, and elect national governments that will choose liberal Commissioners who respect the subsidiarity clause.
But lets be clear about this: the Lib Dems must always put their liberal principles before a blind faith in the European project.
And even if we could, don't you think that the size of the project you envisage (changing both national and EU legislatures) is so great as to make it impossible?
