Organic food

One thing I've never understood about organic food: why is putting safety-tested chemicals on food bad, but putting raw animal faeces on it good?

Why is spraying pesticides onto the outside of food (whence they can be washed off) BAD, while the pesticides secreted by the plants themselves (in their cells, from which they cannot be washed) GOOD?

I'm sure the answer must be something along the lines of "because it's natural". You know, like typhus.
