Scientists are seeking the help of the Australian and US navies to repel Somali pirates who are threatening one of the world's key climate monitoring programmes...
The instruments, which record ocean heat and salinity patterns, are programmed to submerge and eventually resurface to upload their data to satellites.
But with piracy in the western Indian Ocean making it too dangerous for commercial or research vessels to deploy the robotic devices, Australia's government research department, the CSIRO, hope naval forces will help them out.
The increase in piracy had serious implications for their understanding of a region which had a major influence in Australian and south Asian weather and climate, said Dr Ann Thresher of the CSIRO. "We can't send anybody in that area, research voyages have been cancelled and I know there's a report of at least one ship that hired an armed escort – that's pretty extreme when you're talking about climate change."...

‘The Climategate scandal does not affect the science’, ‘scientists have been harassed by a deluge of FOI requests’, ‘scientists have come under death threats’, ‘we have clear evidence that there was a hack, and not a leak at the CRU’, ‘all the old temperature records from the 1980s have been lost’… — how is one now to know which of these were concerns voiced by geniune scientists and which, red herrings spun by public relation professionals to garner sympathy and protect the University of East Anglia’s ’image’?

Is there a limit to the number of lies this University tells us?

It is wonderful to see Josh following the great tradition of political cartoonists down the ages, a tradition in which individuals such as Hogarth and Daumier, who possessed and used drawing skills, visualisation, wit and intelligence that unerringly skewered and still skewers the pompous, the liars, the cheats and the frauds.
Shub, I am beginning to suspect that the current and very public unravelling of the UK establishment will be over and the masses will be universally fascinated with the Next Big Thing and still many stones will be unturned.
