Climate elevations - Josh 304

There's an excellent post over at Climate Audit on Sheep Mountain, mentioned here too.

Regular readers will recognise the familiar outline of the landscape (in the IPCC's First Assessment Report) and there's a great 2009 post to fill in the details at WUWT

But Michael Mann said that the medieval warm period was so extinct, that it had never actualy existed.

It is so good to know that it was there all along, and not beaten flat to make a hockey stick

RIP Hockey Stick, long live the MWP

Perhaps the Hockey Team, now need to persuade the governing body for ice hockey, to redefine the rules and definitions, of what a hockey stick shape actualy is, and that a wibbly wobbly shaped hockey stick is perfectly consistent with ice cores taken from beneath Death Valley

This would permit the hockey team to claim that they were still correct.

Such a course of action would, no doubt satisfy the IPCC's stringent standards of scientific integrity. The IPCC have always been so obliging to the Hockey Team, and there would be no need to raise their standards now

I like the reference to Lamb, although Tickell was more directly relevant, per CA.

Very clever. Took a minute to catch the lyin' - lion thing and I still missed the Lamb reference even though the horizon was there in plain view. Nice.

Coming soon to a cinema near you "An Inconvenient Truth 2". Not a sequel, a complete rewrite.

Please note. The feelings of 97% of climate scientists were hurt during the making of this film. They were ignored, along with their lifetimes work.

Maybe Michael Mann's original Hockey Stick graph was just a forecast of how his salary would rise?

Or perhaps the number of people getting dubious Degrees in Earth and Climate Sciencey stuff?

At least MacBurger restaurants will find it easier to employ people, who can explain to customers, why disposing of paper, cardboard and polystyrene rubbish out of car windows, at any speed, is not very sociable.

I finally got an adjudication from the Advertizing Standards Authority.

i phoned the ASA and complained about the latest WWF advert for adopting Snow Leopards and Penguins and picking a cuddly toy and an email update usual guff and the sanctimonious commentary says numbers of arctic wildlife are declining due to poaching okay and their sea ice habitat is melting away ,They don't actually mention Climate Change by name.
But my argument with the ASA is that the WWF should mention Climate Change and should mention IPCC Sea Ice projection data .The WWF should stick their evidence up there on the screen.

I deliberately did not set out to challenge Climate Change i set out to to get the WWF to put up a IPCC AR5 graphic on their cuddly toy /cuddly animal advert.
Reporting political opinion polls Television and Newspapers have to state their source be it Ipos Mori Gallop etc and then state the number of people they surveyed.
So why not science and environmental issues, someone makes a claim they should state the source of that claim.

If they say 8 out of 10 cats prefer Whiskers the average pet owner deserves to know who carried out the research and was it done properly.Too much to ask.
Apparently 10 other people have also complained about the same Snow Leopard, Penguins adoption WWF ad on various other issues and i will paste up the link for those who want to follow it up.

The reference to your deservedly famous Hubert Lamb is especially poignant.
All that is missing are a few solitary strip bark bristle cone pines somewhere near the summits of them thar hills... Of course deformed, yet thriving near the peaks and suffering in the valleys...(as the new CA data shows they are inversely correlated to temps...) that would make a doubly biting cartoon...
Good work, Josh.

Very subtle Josh. I love the skyline reference though I am not sure everyone will get it.

Well done jamspid - did you point out that it was actually totally untrue that the Arctic and Antactic sea ice is shrinking, as per the WWF voiceover..?

What is this - my sheep ate the medieval warming period?

OT but those who want some amusement should pay a visit to "Climate Audit"

http://climateaudit.org/2014/12/11/unprecedented-model-discrepancy/#comments

where Richard Betts is digging a big hole for himself.

Bitter&Twisted

Yup, barely moved from the front stalls after first sight of Steve M's ironic descriptive:-

".... is that the overheating discrepancy between models and surface temperatures in 2014 was the fourth highest in “recorded” history and that the 5 largest warm discrepancies have occurred in the past 6 years. The cumulative discrepancy between models and observations is far beyond any previous precedent......"

As "Ivan" commented Steve M at his best. :)

Designed to gain attention (not just RB) and is doing so in spades, settle down, popcorn to hand, I think this is going to have legs.

The 'helpful comma' makes it way too easy to figure out!

Lamb was a real pioneer for getting climate studies deepened and thorough. At CRU he was one man with a desk, and a shared secretary, yet if his moral and intellectual worth could be measured on scales, and all the subsequent worth of CRU was put in the other pan, it would still be up in the air.

What's Josh's problem with long vu historiography ?

For all his cartooning , the decadal trend line just keeps on ticking upward- it's scarcely a case of
In hockey stick no vinces

Sherlock1 thanks but most importantly thanks to these 10 other people.

copy and paste up this link from a previous adjudication from a WWF ad from 2010.

Jesus only had 12 apostles and hopefully Andrew Montford and Antony Watts have few more than that.
Every time these misleading climate change themed ads and TV shows appear we need to jump on them on mass.
BBC Points of veiw ,Offcom ,ASA,the new Lord Levison Newspaper ombudsman etc, etc.
There is enough of us in the Skeptic movement on BH and WUWT to coordinate and do that.

I will challenge my particular adjudication because i am not actually challenging Climate Change just that the WWF need to put up the source of their sea ice claim .Tactically draw them out and then we can challenge it.

Perhaps the day may comes when we can commission our own mainstream Television advertizing refuting AGW and sea ice claims etc you never know.

Nice one, Josh.

Meanwhile, whilst just now idly looking at some bumph about the bristlecone pine, the following incident surely ranks very highly amongst all-time acts of sheer madness:

The bristlecone pine only lives in scattered, arid mountain regions of six western states of America, but the oldest are found in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains of California. There the pines exist in an exposed, windswept, harsh environment, free of competition from other plants and the ravages of insects and disease. The oldest bristlecones usually grow at elevations of 10,000 to 11,000 feet.

The oldest known tree is "Methuselah", which is 4,789 years old. To keep Methuselah from harm, this tree isn't labeled, as the other trees are. An older tree called Prometheus was killed shortly after it was discovered in 1964. This happened when a geologist searching for evidence of Ice Age glaciers was taking some core samples from several bristlecones. Just as he realized he had found a tree over 4,000 years old, his coring tool broke. Amazingly the U.S. Forest Service gave him permission to cut down the tree. Prometheus turned out to be 4,950 years old. It was a 300 year old tree when the pyramids were being built in Egypt. After people heard about this incident, the U.S. Forest Service tightened security around the bristlecones.

Do you think that Mann sculpts that sky line in mashed potatoes? Close Encounters of the Herd Kind.

Dec 13, 2014 at 8:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterTinyCO2

I don't think Betts is digging a hole for himself over there too bad, though you can tell when he encounters inconvenient questions... He doesn't answer. The same for the hit-piece he wrote with Tamsin at WUWT (based on an inability to actually runderstand what Tim Ball wrote in the first place). In what could be described as the ultimate in hypocrisy, Betts chimed in after over 1000 posts accusing everyone of vile invective and an unwillingness to conduct a dialog... Yes, 1000 posts, without even mentioning the legitimate complaint that he misread Dr. Ball in the first place.

Lyin is an understatement, Josh.

Josh, this is one of the best cartoons I have ever seen. It is marvelously witty, both in the sense of being a very intelligent piece of commentary and also wickedly humorous. And the fact that so few people will get it adds to the pleasure of sharing the enjoyment. Nice work, mate!
