Petition to the President
Guest Post by David Holland
Dick Lindzen has sent to President Trump a letter and petition signed by some 300 scientists and experts (H/T Anthony Watts). The petition is for the US to withdraw from the UNFCCC. I had some difficulty accessing it but eventually located a pdf of the letter and the petition itself here.
I'm sure Dick speaks for many BH readers as well some of our MPs. Even at the high water mark in 2008 only a little over half of British voters thought humans were responsible for most global warming and less than half thought it a pressing problem. Recent opinion polls now show that barely 10% of the public regard climate change as a serious concern. Few can now dispute the global agricultural benefits of increased carbon dioxide concentration, but in the UK and elsewhere we are seeing the chronic health damage resulting from the dash to diesel subsidised by foolish governments.
Hopefully when Parliament debates the Grand Repeal Bill some of our smarter MPs will push to dump any directives requiring reductions in carbon dioxide emissions or support for the UNFCCC.

...to get around this Manuel basically assigns properties to neutrons and protons which are, shall we say 'novel'....
Ah. And so your first reaction to a novel hypothesis is to counter it with a smear rather than any contrary data, is it? And you go off on a completely irrelevant direction about his personal life?
That tells me very little about Manuel's theories. But quite a lot about the kind of person you are....

Good to know that Orang Utans have a sense of humour, in addition to just as much chance as Climate Scientists at making predictions about the climate.
Sea ice? Seems okay to me.
PC
And end with El Nino.
RR, more data is usually better.
To be truly pedantic, stewgreen, it is the proboscis monkey that I refer to, which is what the locals also know as “the white man.” Racist? No (and not only ‘cos the locals ain’t white, don’t’cha know…). Offensive? Only if you want it to be.
Dodgy, see any astrophysics textbook.
Oliver K. Manuel, is a person I’ve banned from WUWT for carpet bombing threads with his vision of the Iron Sun Theory, which I personally think is nutty.
When even Watts bans you ...
More data, Mr Clarke? That actually looks like less data, to me, but in more detail. Interesting to note that the median is from 1981, when sea ice was close to its highest on the satellite records. I wonder what that median would be, should it be from 1973, when satellite measurements actually began (and sea ice extent was not much different from today's).
Phil Clarke NSIDC Ice Research does feature in Greenpeace publicity. Now that Greenpeace have confirmed they lie, it is appropriate to tar then with the same brush, just as you do.
If Climate Science and been quicker to disassociate itself from proven liars, itmight have retained some credibility.

Naughty, naughty: cherry-picking.

@ Feb 28, 2017 at 3:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterThinkingScientist references a pamphlet and suggests that the photo p35 has been photoshopped. - etc .
Hard to see how that is photoshopped and he has a reference to the original video source. You can find that at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZS2eIRkcR0
The full video scene with the tree is at about 7:45 mins in part 3 I link to. Complete with Nils Axel-Morner.
Whether the photo was photoshopped or not - (I'm inclined to believe Nils Axel-Morner's account anyway) the point I would like to make is that business is booming on these fragile little islands - as though nobody has told these developers that they are wasting their money and that their business is doomed. - see below.
From Hotel Intelligence Maldives
Maldives Tourism
Overall Visitor Trends
In 2013, visitor arrivals registered significant growth of 17.4% over
the previous year to reach 1.1 million. It was also the first time that
visitor arrivals have crossed the one-million mark, which was largely
attributable to tourist promotion campaigns as well as new air routes
to the Maldives arising from its Open Skies Policy. The Maldives is
currently served by 32 air carriers, as compared to other destinations in
the Indian Ocean such as Mauritius (19 air carriers) and Seychelles (7 air
carriers). As at YTD September 2014, visitor arrivals increased by 10.1%
y-o-y, underpinned by significant double-digit growth in visitors from
Mainland China, South Korea and India.
In its Fourth Tourism Master Plan 2012, the government has projected a
double-digit increase in international visitor arrivals for the ten-year period
to an estimated 2.5 million by 2021, more than double of the current
arrival figures achieved in 2013. The government is optimistic in achieving
this growth through a deeper partnership between the public and private
sectors of Maldives tourism
Kleinefeldmaus. Thank you for the information that the image came from a video. This clears up a problem for me that there are two published images of that tree, one with and one without a ship on the horizon, both taken from exactly the same position and in exactly the same direction. Unlikely except now I see from a video taken using a tripod.
So was it the Orang Utans that ripped up that tree on the Maldives, or a bunch of Green Gorillas, unsure how to swing from cause to coral nation?
Gwendolyn. I'd be rather more careful about calling Australian Green fanatics (with a hatred of mangroves) Orang Utans (whatever that means) or gorillas. Your veggies might be at risk.
Supertroll, I think Trump is looking to deprive Green Guerillas of their lifeforce, money. Veggies have made their own lifestyle choices,, and produce too much gas, especially if in a Greenhouse.
The planet does not care how or how the greenhouse gases were emitted; what matters is the actual concentrations and consequent forcings ..........

Polar ice doesn't care either:
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/03/07/claim-global-creating-thicker-ice-in-the-baltic/
Thicker ice proves Climate Scientists get thicker, and should be thinned down.
Stew, maybe they are orang liars :-)

One assumes that the vast majority of these people arrive/will arrive by air. Planes emit lots of CO2. Increasing CO2, we are told, will increase the rate of sea-level rise. That, we are told, puts places like the Maldives at risk. Funny that the Maldives government wants to increase visitor numbers, therefore wants to increase flights, therefore wants to increase CO2 emissions, therefore...No, presumably they don't believe the final therefore (that their islands are going to drown) any more than I do.

You say "presumably they don't believe the final therefore (that their islands are going to drown) any more than I do".
That is obviously 'fake news'.
Ever heard of lemmings?
We have it on good authority via someone named Clarke that the island is sinking. You better believe it- these investments are doomed - doomed I say
You had better believe the Maldives consider they will drown. They even practiced holding government meetings a la snorkle.
@ Supertroll March 8 2017
Oops - they must have forgotten the snorkel - but never mind here's gloating 'never wrong' Phil in his trusty boat.

They did not use snorkels for their publicity stunt sitting on the seabed! Something to do with physics, air pressure, weight of water and design inadequacies of the human diaphragm.
Jaques Yves Cousteau invented the Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, naming it the Aqualung, which helped finance his adventures into an undersea world, which inspired me as a child.
Gwendolyn. I did know they used breathing apparatus, but "a la Aqualung" did not seem to have the same poetic ring or cachet as "a la snorkel". Also if you look you will see that, like all divers, they all sport an accessory snorkel.
I did, however, enjoy the thought of Maldives ministers having to bob up and down to breath between making climate policy.
Concerning the physics, they could have used air supplied by tube from the surface in the shallow water where the publicity stunt took place. I have used this method once in the Bahamas. I don't recommend it.
Supertroll, the Maldives are to be congratulated for a wonderful pubilicity stunt, that is still discussed today.
Like most of Climate Science, it was based on lies, fabrications and over exaggeration, and has had a wonderful contribution towards promoting air travel, especially by Climate Scientists.
I am only guessing, but I think the Maldives will survive until 2020. Climate Science on the other hand, ........
Well, once again I'm late to this party. But I'd like to give our resident non-sequitorial fellow par excellence, aka Phil Clarke, a glimmer of hope onto which he can almost seamlessly glom, courtesy of the various arms, elbows, hands and fingers of the UNEP.
Perhaps unbeknownst to Clarke and his sources -such as they are - for approximately five years - the IPCC has been fading and folding into a more PC sustainable fog. For example, consider the following:
What could possibly be more important to the IPCC than "gender equality" and "women's empowerment", eh?!
But wait there's more ...
There's an organization called the IISD. They claim to be:
"Neutral", I'm not so sure about. But they're definitely up to date ... and prolific. Over the years, I have learned much from their quasi-official reporting of IPCC proceedings at which they have been invariably present. So consider the following from the IISD's report on the proceedings of the IPCC's younger sibling, the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, for the acronymically-challenged)
Translation for the bureacratese-challenged: The IPCC will fade into a mere shadow of its former over-hyped self while the younger sibling takes control of (increasingly-ignored) UNEP send-money-now messaging.
But on the bright side of propaganda life, it would appear that - as the old song goes - with a little bit of luck, Clarke can find a new home hyping the "positive synergies" in his typically diversionary fashion. I have little doubt that it will be "transformative" ;-)
Got a little confused there Hilary (so much -burocratese and -acrocronymese), but are you suggesting Our Phil should become a tranny? Whatever has this site become?
Hilary Ostrov & Supertroll
I think the IPCC may be hoping for an extension of their funding to see whether gender assigning either male or female names to storms, may have upset their miscalculated pre-determined levels of sensitivity.
Who knows what might have happened if Hurricane Andrew had been Andrea, or Katrina a Kevin?
Hilary. thank you as always for keeping us updated with the nonsense going on at the UN.
I don't know whether to be pleased at the prospect of the IPCC fading away, or concerned by what it's younger sibling will get up to. Still, lots of troughs for lots of snouts, eh?

If that is THE Susan Solomon , and THE Kerry Emanuel on that letter, I am sure Trump can stop worrying.
He can always Google their names individually, along with "Climate Audit". I haven't tried any others, yet.

He seems to be a bit careless about recalling factual evidence.

Apparently, some Climate Scientists are not sure whether they can trust each other to be honest.
Why should Trump, or anyone else?

Three very good posts, thanks.
Capell, now that this has happened:

The new Head of the EPA can prepare lists of Universities and their Faculties that are not worth more US Taxpayer Funding. Massachusetts Institute of Technology has earned instant recognition by writing to Trump.
George Mason University excelled itself with the RICO 20 letter
Meanwhile Richard Black (formerly with the BBC) formed ECIU, the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, but it is not clear whether they got the best or worst minds in Climate Science.
Meanwhile Phil is floundering in the deep off the Maldives and Pachouri has given up railway engineering for bigger fish(heads)

It seems the Climate in the White House became less toxic once John Holdren left. People can already breathe more easily.
I think Linden has been reading our posts!
Capell, it is quite simple for Team Trump now.
Question: Did you ever use your skill, experience and/or common sense, to criticise in a constructive manner,, Mann's Hockey Stick, Cook's 97% Consensus, or anything by Gergis?
MIT and GMU could both slash million$ off their taxpayer funded payroll, now, and see if the sky falls down
Just for the record, when Kleinefeldmaus says:
Can I just point out that it was not me that suggested the photo was photoshopped, it was Phil Clarke. I was rebutting his insinuation by pointing out that it actually looked as though the image had data error. I then posted a link to a video that purports to show the same tree, definitely looking real and in-situ, and that clearly isn't photoshopped.
Don't want people thinking I agree with Phil Clarke's suggestion of deliberate falsification to make a point. I'll leave that to Peter Gleick, Greenpeace and the other enviro-mentalists.
I think the photoshoop
There's a colour version here that makes the fakery even clearer. I'm not sure they are even the same tree above and below.
The caption reads
So, rising sea levels should have torn Morner's tree down, when he found it had indeed been torn down he 'replanted' the evidence, presumably at a location chosen from memory, and came up with an uncorroborated story about Australian environmental vandals.
What is this tree meant to be 'proving' anyhow? Sea level rise since the 50s would be around 12cm or 8 inches; this specimen seems to be at least a metre or more above the sea level, even if it was low tide at the time of the photo.
As I have observed before, 'scepticism' is not what it used to be.
Phil lad. You're on a very sticky wicket here. I recall reading boasts by the Australian green vandals that they had pulled up the tree. Even your Maldivian source identified the location (but misidentified the species) of the tree. So it existed and grew at that site for many years, even being the source of a legend. It was subsequently removed and this act was then bragged about by so-called environmentalists.
Suggest you retire with good grace and much egg.
I suppose the remaining petition to President Trump should be about whether Climate Scientists should face criminal investigations and possibly jail terms with confiscation of assets, as well as losing their jobs.
I am trying to remember what many Climate Scientists were writing to President Obama about, amongst others, in order that wording can be proportionate rather than Progressive in nature.

Perhaps Phil Clarke is trotting out more Green lies from a Mannian sauce for cooking tree rings.
This is what Morner said in an interview about the subject (June 22nd 2007)
"You frighten a lot of scientists. If they say that climate is not changing, they lose their research grants. And some people cannot afford that; they become silent, or a few of us speak up, because we think that it’s for the honesty of science, that we have to do it."
The Tree Issue
"This tree [see above photo], which I showed in the documentary, is interesting. This is a prison island, and when people left the island, from the ‘50s, it was a marker for them, when they saw this tree alone out there, they said, ”Ah, freedom!” ... I knew that this tree was in that terrible position already in the 1950s. So the slightest rise, and it would have been gone. I used it in my writings and for television."
"You know what happened? There came an Australian sea- level team, which was for the IPCC and against me. Then the students pulled down the tree by hand! They destroyed the evidence. What kind of people are those? And we came to launch this film ”Doomsday Called Off,” right after that, and the tree was still green. And I heard from the locals that they had seen the people who had pulled it down. So I put it up again, by hand, and made my TV program ... "
"They call themselves scientists, and they’re destroying evidence! A scientist should always be open for reinterpretation, but you can never destroy evidence. And they were being watched, thinking they were clever."
Do you think Morner needed a photoshopped picture Phil babe?
