Discussion > Donald Trump thread
I admire people, in the public eye who speak their mind.
Not 'on message' like so many politicians, not evading answers by giving pre thought out 'lines'.
Yes, he does come across as a bully, ignorant on some issues, but if you were to question any UK politician and said you can not answer my questions using 'lines' or be evasive, you would get silence or Trump style answers.
Remember he is an American responding to Americans in american society, with all that surrounds those 'issues' that exist in that land.
When Corbyn got elected Labour leader, I had high hopes that he would herald a change in style as he was a straight speaker.
Look how that went down. He gives considered answers to most questions and drops him self in it every time.
Most people want their politicians to be nice and cuddly with them and tough on 'others'.
My excuse for Corbyn is his socialist madness of which there is no cure.
I think there are a lot of people with a admiration for the way Trump has shaken up things and what he says, most won't say so though. He has touched a chord with many people and there concerns about the way the world is moving. His success and the recent Austrian Presidential election doesn't please most of the media, labeling them "Far Right", and 50% of the population far right without saying as much.
Trumps new Energy speech is amazing
..whoever wrote it seems pretty sensible
- There is a script, but Trump adds extensively Bismarck, North Dakota (5-26-16)
(NPR has decided it's listeners must have a filtered version)
This guy doesn't seem that he is a normal politician.
The speech is filled with policies eg "We are going to cancel the Paris Climate Agreement
..and stop all payments of US tax dollars to UN Global Warming programs" point in video
Priorities "clean Air and Clean Water" for Americans
“This [Paris] agreement gives foreign bureaucrats control over how much our energy and how much we use, right here, in America. So, foreign bureaucrats are going to be controlling what we’re using and what we’re doing on our land in our country. No way. No way.” ... point in video
Trump can see the damage done to the USA by climate science. He is not likely to be subtle or polite in rectifying it, and seems happy to annoy his enemies as long as it generates more support for him.
I don't like him, but he has a lot going for him. It will be worth watching climate science fight for survival without Government financial and legal assistance for 25 years. It will all be forgotten within two and a half.
BREXIT and TRUMP two little words that are causing Unprecedented Alarm amongst Climate Scientists, and this time, they may be right. Whatever the BREXIT result, political divisions within the Conservative party will reopen. TRUMP/CLINTON is going to see the gloves come off, and RICO 20 is the first story that Clinton didn't need. More to follow, I think.
This is interesting (and amusing). On on the one hand, we have Trump - who is supposed not to believe in dangerous climate change - concerned that rising sea levels could endanger one of his golf courses: LINK. And, on the other, we have the Chinese - who are supposed to believe in dangerous climate change - spending billions constructing low-lying islands in the South China Sea: LINK
Robert Guenier, imagine how much more wonderful the world would be if we stopped fighting the war against climate change.
We could do so many more useful things with our time and money.
Trump is revenge for all the reasonable things people have asked for in the past and treated like dummies and pariahs. 'Fine if you're going to treat us like scum, we'll really be scum'. He's like one of those movie barbarians that takes control of a sophisticated monarchy. all the effete courtiers find that their sly machinations don't work against blunt brutality. They cleverly manipulate him into a corner with red tape and convention and he chops them in half to show that there is always a way to get out of paperwork and protocol.
I don't know if he can go all the way but he can make the other side sweat.
Tiny CO2, I like that! Taken to its logical conclusion, Trump is the worst nightmare possibly imaginable by Global Warmists, and others, for the simple reason, they they 'created' him in the first place.
Every force has an equal and opposing force. There is a lot of opposing force in the USA waiting to be unleashed.
BBC headline:-
Donald Trump would 'cancel' Paris climate deal
" ........Matt McGrath, BBC News Environment Correspondent_ " Donald Trump's desire to see the end of US participation in the Paris climate agreement is increasing the pressure for a rapid ratification around the world.
But that's not easy as the process can often get bogged down in national parliaments. The Obama administration and others believe they are well on the way to securing that level of support which they feel would then make a US withdrawal, in the face of global condemnation, much less likely. But they could be dead wrong about that.Mr Trump though doesn't have to go to such lengths to end US involvement. He could choose to ignore or reverse or delay Obama's initiatives on climate including the Clean Power Plan. The real strength of the Paris agreement is that it comes from the bottom up, countries decide for themselves what their emissions cutting commitments will be. But this could also be a huge weakness.
If President Trump doesn't put emissions cutting regulations into place, no one could force him to. Would China or India and others continue to cut their carbon while the US did not? Unlikely."
But, bless Auntie she did manage to find a comment from an "Environmental advocate" and a billionaire one to boot!
" Environmental advocates called Mr Trump's proposals "frightening"."Trump's energy policies would accelerate climate change, protect corporate polluters who profit from poisoning our air and water, and block the transition to clean energy that is necessary to strengthen our economy and protect our climate and health," Tom Steyer, a billionaire environmental activist, told Reuters. ."

Yup. The media (the BBC) still don't get why the hoi polloi (the electorate) aren't thinking the way they are told to. Here's another 50% story from the meeja:
A couple of days ago, the BBC managed to report that "Women 'post 50% of misogynistic tweets'."
No, really.
The article then went on to wholly ignore the possibility that, if so many women were guilty of misogyny, maybe the working definition of misogyny might have been cooked up by complete and utter barking morons. I mean, excuse my language, but, Christ on a bike in the afternoon, can you actually imagine a worse case of credulous media stupidity and inability to apply common sense?
Comments on the article were disabled. But less than the authors.
Green Sand, I have not watched any TV news today 11:15pm, heard a bit on the radio.
If the BBC are reporting Trump fairly on climate change, and allowing a response from an alarmist, that is nearer to being a balanced bit of reporting by the BBC, than they have previously allowed.
I wonder whether they will have to report that the majority of Americans think that the 97% Consensus is a pile of poo.
The BBC did not have to report anything during the last UK General Election, because all parties apart from the Greens, avoided the subject. The Greens got a kicking for their troubles.
UK MPs have not endeared themselves to Trump, nor has the BBC. Various other European leaders have also sneered. Trump will put his own, and US interests first. Trump has no reason to launch a charm offensive on the EU. Any deals with the EU, over a wide range of issues will have to be on Trump's terms.
The EU are going to look pretty stupid trying to develop world climate policies without the USA, Russia, China and India. What makes anyone think that Trump will care? Canada will be pleased to have the US buy their TarSands, assuming the new Canadian PM will allow it. Canadians won't appreciate their Premier blocking jobs and income.
Of course BREXIT would place the new Conservative PM in a very good position to have talks with Trump, and dealing with the 'EU Problem' would be high on the list. It could be very advantageous for the UK.
Of course neither BREXIT nor Trump may occur, and officially, Climate Scientists don't do predictions, but either event will cause major damage. A double whammy would be terminal.
Months ago March 11 over on Unthreaded @SimonW brought up something : Scott Adams the Dilbert has some special insight on Trump and has been talking about it for more that 1 year He claims Trump uses master hypnotism techniques, whereas media think he is stupid
"I doubled-down and modified my prediction to say he would win the general election by a large margin. I believe I am alone in that predictionUseful Scott Adams video explaining Trump's master skills
...Trump brought a flame thrower to a stick fight"
Good intro via @SimpnW who said
Incidentally, if you haven't seen it yet, Dilbert author Scott Adams has both predicted (from last August when he was 100/1) and explained the rise of The Donald . Very compelling reading whether you support the bouffant one or not.He quotes Trump calling AGW a hoax .
Yesterday Paul Homewood did a good post on the Trump Energy speech
I posted some more in the comments there.
Scenario 1 : Trump is just a front to get Hilary elected by him doing something dumb at the last moment
Scenario 2 : Something else like Trump wants to win :
Like why would an entertainer want to become president..isn't it a big hassle ?
There's nothing dumb about the handle he has on USA energy policy, he must have pulled in some top class advisers. That speech was a tour de force.
The BBC have just chosen to report Why has Trump caught Clinton in the polls?
"For the first time in this long election campaign, Republican Donald Trump has pulled ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton in the RealClearPolitics average of national polls."
yeh ..well still 5+ months to go
stewgreen, is Mann going to keep himself out of court until after the US election?
It seems that access to US Justice can be delayed for climate politics purposes.
Donald Trump tells Californians " There is no drought ."
This is the current drought status of California.
Does anyone else here notice a mismatch between Trump's world view and reality?
EM: drought?
I have been reading about California's mismanagement of its water resources, and that is in addition to watering golf courses. Lack of rain isn't the only reason for a shortage of water.
EM - it seems to me that Mr Trump's "world view", as you call it, and reality coincide quite well. For example:
Last one: You think climate change is a real thing? Is there human-caused climate change?DONALD TRUMP: I think there’s a change in weather. I am not a great believer in man-made climate change. I’m not a great believer. There is certainly a change in weather that goes – if you look, they had global cooling in the 1920s and now they have global warming, although now they don’t know if they have global warming. They call it all sorts of different things; now they’re using “extreme weather” I guess more than any other phrase. I am not – I know it hurts me with this room, and I know it’s probably a killer with this room – but I am not a believer. Perhaps there’s a minor effect, but I’m not a big believer in man-made climate change.
STEPHEN STROMBERG, EDITORIAL WRITER: Don’t good businessmen hedge against risks, not ignore them?
TRUMP: Well, I just think we have much bigger risks. I mean I think we have militarily tremendous risks. I think we’re in tremendous peril. I think our biggest form of climate change we should worry about is nuclear weapons. The biggest risk to the world, to me – I know President Obama thought it was climate change – to me the biggest risk is nuclear weapons. That’s – that is climate change. That is a disaster, and we don’t even know where the nuclear weapons are right now. We don’t know who has them. We don’t know who’s trying to get them. The biggest risk for this world and this country is nuclear weapons, the power of nuclear weapons.
If California seems like a paradise on earth to European eyes, it is not only because of the many sunny days and its ideal position along the Pacific, but also because of its sumptuous vegetation made possible by the extensive and elaborate measures which have been taken to conquer the desert through artificial irrigation. Both Holland and California must continually deal with the water problem, but in reverse order: for the Dutch, the problem is, ”how do we keep it out?”, while the big issue for the Californians is, ”how do we get it in?”
Nismofury
Could you translate Trumps first statement into something a mere Englishman might understand. What was all that about rooms?
Robert Christopher
Drought is reduced precipitation. California has been suffering that for most of the last four years
The problem with California's water supply is that the water distribution compact for the Colorado river watershed is a century old and now allocates more water than is in the system. You can see the result in Lake Mead. The reservoir was last as low while they were filling it in the 1930s.
Population growth in California. Blaming global warming or Donald Trump for lack of planning and investment in water management doesn't wash. When Californians are ready to fix their problems, they'll vote for someone to find the money and do it. Maybe a Trump-reformed EPA might make that easier. The wealthy Hollywood eco-zealots will probably be quite happy for the poor to see their water rates skyrocket, whether they are immigrants or not.
