The ITV presenters tweet is false and alarmist
Air is much cleaner than 40 years ago

That tweet asks us to believe
"one in five deaths worldwide (10.2 million out of 56 million per year) is caused by air pollution from burning fossil fuels."

That of course is a "too wow to be true" statistic
Come on how many of your friends have died from air pollution ?

Sure people die in my village. So is it one in 5
people die here from old age, cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, Traffic collisions etc. ..none of Covid
And zero of air pollution cos it is listed as the main cause of death on almost zero UK death certificates

Now air pollution really does kill African/Asian mothers cooking indoors over solid fuel AFAIK it's pretty big number hundreds of thousand maybe a million IIRC

AFAIK claims of tens of thousands of UK deaths per year
come from a statistical exercise
of counting up all of the days we all lose off our lifespan due to air pollution
and across the whole pollution those lost days
add up to THE EQUIVALENT of tens of thousands of lives lost.

interesting , but you can't go comparing that to ACTUAL number of deaths caused by other things
like Road collisions and alcohol.
cos that is the fallacy of comparing Apples vs Oranges

In our alcohol total you haven't include all of the countries lost life days due to alcohol

Similarly you can't compare 40K equivalent Air Pollution deaths 4,000 road collision deaths
for one thing those few days we all lose at aged 82 are lower quality days.

Air pollution shows errors in risk perception (Cog Psych 101): it kills millions, largely poor & minorities,
but gets a tiny % of the attention of hazards that kill dozens eg terrorism, school shootings, police shootings of unarmed suspects).

On the PHomewood thread the point was made that reducing particulate pollution
should warm a city

It Victorian times the sun had to fight through the smog
but today it's straight through

ie Green Policies warm the planet

The counter argument is that smog on the ground should change the albedo so that the city warms in winter

In December 2020 Southwark Coroner's Court found that air pollution "made a material contribution" to the death of Ella Kiss-Debrah. Ella died in February 2013 at the age of nine after over two years of severe asthma attacks and cardiac arrests that led to multiple hospital visits.

Rosamund Kissi-Debrah, Ella’s mother, spent seven years after her daughter’s death trying to find the answers as to why her previously healthy child had suddenly become so gravely ill. An initial inquest found no connection to air pollution and at no point was air pollution mentioned as a potential factor in the time that Ella was ill.

Scotland : There's a report just out which says in the 4 cities to implement LEZs, the emissions levels are now within legal limits probably due to the introduction of electric buses.
There's no need for anyone else to change their vehicle.
Hmm the legal limits are arbitrary anyway

Similar arguments apply to London, actual road pollution measurements are often very low
