Robert, On self-driving cars, there's another aspect which is not being addressed, afaik. At present the car reacts to what it "sees" around itself. That means it can only be a competent bad driver: it cannot anticipate, read the road ahead and pick up extraneous signals.
So, for example, if the driver of the car ahead is distracted and runs into a stationary vehicle without braking, the self-driving car will join the accident as its cruise control does not allow for the vehicle in front coming to an instant stop.
When I was taught - and when I taught my kids - one of the mantras was that you should never be surprised; if you are it's a failure to anticipate.
We all know situations such as when, on the motorway, there's a sudden flare of brake lights in the distance so you lift off to allow more space for braking or avoidance. It's kept me out of trouble a few times.
Driving is a dynamic environment with a multitude of variables that change all the time, often suddenly. Only responding to the immediate surroundings is inadequate.
Having said that, it does frustrate/concern me that so many drivers appear oblivious to their environs, following each other too closely, etc.. So maybe the faster reactions of a computer driver will be an improvement!
Australian media seem to have been uncharacteristically restrained about the sub. It would be nice if they always stuck to reporting and not speculating or moralising.
Ross Lea,
Interesting link to the Cummins hydrogen combustion engine blurb. Sounds good, but I'm not sure what word Sir Humphrey would choose to describe the economics of it: "brave" and "heroic" don't go nearly far enough.
FWIW, here's Toyota's comparable video. It's a bit of a jumble, with several references to a "fuel cell", but all the pictures being of a combustion engine.
tomo,
The younger Kerry would appear to be a chip off the old block in more ways than one. As for "failson", rather than too gendered, maybe it just needs the addition of age and skin colour to be let through the well established "old white men" gateway.
Thought this from Jennifer Marohasy was a pretty good response to a popular "influencer" and his bemoaning the death of the Great Barrier Reef.
oh, my.....

Compare and contrast with Ash Sarkar's contribution.
Which is discussed here if you've not seen it.

This looks promising. JCB lead the field in the UK.

"...said it was using Starlink satellites for the trip — the submersible itself was not using the technology to communicate. How, or to what extent, the vessel's mothership was using Starlink to communicate remained unknown."
They really should have just left it at " the submersible itself was not using the technology to communicate". Everything after that was irrelevant.
But these leftists "fact checkers" just couldn't help themselves in their need to beclown themselves by attacking someone they have come to detest.
Tomo,
Two things stand out in the comments on that video;
1. How insightful the comments are.
2. No one is being an a-hole and revelling in the deaths of the five on the sub.
Sadly 2 is a very rare thing. Far too many people seem to be happy these five are dead (because they had it coming for being rich, at the bottom of the ocean, donating to the GOP etc).
Juan Brown on that submarine
Comments are worth a look

DaveS,
What is it about the entitled, self declared oppressed on the lefts need to signal their stupidity to everyone at every opportunity?
She didn't have to say anything but just couldn't help herself.
