tomo,
Like Russell Hall, Bongino has the boost to self-importance of believing he has a large audience. Also at play for Bongino is the "he who rides the tiger" factor: his income depends on keeping a large audience so he has to give them what he thinks they want. This also entails threading the needle between cheesing viewers off by going too far and cheesing viewers off by being too repetitive/predictable.

Quite a few people work hard getting good at the piano, but not many make much of a living out of it. People trying to make it as YouTubers probably have an even smaller chance.

Even Jo Nova has to play the populist. I think her forum would be much better if she replaced the per-day "open thread" with a perennial "unthreaded" (as we have here). There's an undignified rush each day to get in early on the open thread and harvest lots of green thumbs (I don't like the thumbs either, but they're not the big problem). The previous day's comments are pretty much ignored as of then. To keep them alive people duplicate them to the latest. More reverb in the echo chamber.

The worst effect is that Jo's *main* posts are also ignored after one or two days. Topics at Judith Curry can continue getting comments for weeks. Jo's good work ends up being far more ephemeral. I have pointed this out to her and she (perhaps diplomatically) agrees, but says it's popular the way it is.

A pity that an interesting, well written posting, like today's, on the Green Hydrogen reality check (The only generator that can make affordable hydrogen is brown coal), will be a zombie topic by Monday.

Robert

yeah seen the "legend in his own lunchtime" effect at play in various places - indeed, not exclusively online - for some reason the "audiophile community" come to mind! (perhaps not Peugeot pedants but the analogy works for me)

I ration my Bongino exposure d/t the clickbaiting and padding he often runs with - that said - sometimes he delivers the goods, just not often enough to require a daily visit.

meanwhile Joe heads for the comfort zone of his basement - again....

tomo,
On Bongino: I read and occasionally comment at AussieFrogs, a French car forum (I post under the pseudonym "robs", because even an open climate denier can be embarrassed about having a liking for French cars — I hope my secret will be safe here). Russell Hall is a frequent poster and has put together a thread with many interesting historical photos. A lot of work from a keen enthusiast. At the 947th posting in that thread he makes a spelling error which gets pointed out a few comments later by another enthusiast. The interchange between the two escalates and Russell goes way over the top.

I think the fact that he mentions a couple of times that the thread has 54,000 readers is a clue to his apparent madness. Of course that was a misunderstanding by him -- it was 54000 *reads*, and in a thread of near 1000 posts, that might only equate to fifty readers. That fact doesn't matter, his perception of having many thousands following him got his sense of proportion all out of whack.

I resisted a strong urge to post the Monty Python homologue of the exchange. I kept saying "No, you really shouldn't" to myself for several hours after reading it and, for once, I listened. I fear I might be turning into an adult.

Anyhow, if 54,000 is intoxicating, what effect will Bongino's 3.2M "followers" have? Internet "celebrities" might benefit from a brief glimpse into the Total Perspective Vortex. Hollywood stars too.

the search will now be on for a solution to the bureaucratic incompetence. More bureaucrats

= The Starmer Solution

- we're already seeing it ........

Bongino has a fixed length show - that format regularly defeats him - he should stfu and end earlier if he's essentially got little of consequence to say - the angry futile raving detracts from his core message. Anecdotally, Bongino is quite a quiet, shy even person away from the camera and lights - I doubt the leopard will change its spots but somebody should tell him that brevity has value....

Mailman,
The "shot at the king" wasn't in the interests of ordinary Americans, Blue or Red. By now I've watched maybe three hours of analysis of the incident. The picture that's forming in my mind is the familiar bureaucratic morass along with a child keen on the idea of being an internet "somebody" (hoping, as in video games, that there would be another life).

There are any number of tragic kids around with no depth of thinking. And the bureaucratic incompetence was well on view in the COVID capers. As in Brazil world, the search will now be on for a solution to the bureaucratic incompetence. More bureaucrats I expect.

tomo,
Enjoyed the Barnes Law interview with the former sniper. Stayed on a bit into the second hour too, but not to the bitter end Enjoyed Barnes's spray on Philadelphia. Also noticed him covering the question of whether Trump should get his own security. It's fraught.

Bongino video was ok, but a bit cliquey. Felt more to be geeing up an audience than putting a reasoned argument.

Robert

Evidence and reason huh?

You're not wrong - I do feel that activist propagandists predominate in the MSM and that the shallow pols react to the MSM foisted talking points in an altogether exasperating display of gutless floundering and vapid PR sloganeering.

I listened to the Robert Barnes & David Freiheit segment on the events in Pennsylvania - Barnes in particular has direct and personal experience of that state's institutions - both Federal offices and State - which are absolutely relevant to what went down.
