Discussion > Random 403 errors
Squarespace just told me they are still working on it. I also told them that it was daft if it still applied to registered users.

As I said before, people have to take some responsibility for their actions and who in their right mind picks up a flash drive off the pavement and sticks it in their computer? Certainly no-one I know.
There is a limit to what software developers and hardware builders can do to circumvent human inanity!
Even my son's earlier attempts to send me photos of my grand-daughter by Dropbox got caught because at that time I didn't know it and had no guarantee that these files actually came from him. A phone call put me right but it's a simple enough precaution and no amount of security can block stuff you wantonly download yourself without checking the source.
Yes, gov probably uses MS Office. It's reliable; it's efficient; I've never had a problem with it. It's what the bored bureaucrats do with their machines in the lunch break that's the problem!

I've had no trouble today but I have stopped using Preview though whether that's relevant I wouldn't know.
I've posted several comments earlier which appeared not to invoke the error message. I didn't keep count, and also accidentally previewed a comment, but certainly equal to or more than 4.
Then it appeared again. Once so far this evening.
Less than two hours later it has gone, suggesting a changed kinetic factor, because two hours was not previously good enough for refreshment.
My now best guess is that it is squarespace tinkering with spam-control, that is: x-number-of-attempted-posts-in-y-number-of-seconds, or some such fancy undergraduate algorithm.
test1
test2
test3
test4 (also previewed, as was my comment at 9:49, subsequent were not)
test5 (also previewed) attemtped at the same time (10pm) but refused by 403
test6 (previewed)
test7 (previewed)
I had a 403 about half an hour ago having logged in and done one 'preview post' (on what would have been a long posting).
And on a different machine from this one.
My test8 also flunked at the time. I hadn't considered whether length might also be a criterion. Are you suggesting it might be?
Are you suggesting it might be?
On the basis of one failure, no. But I thought it was worth mentioning.
Friday it's back
2-3 previews and a post, then 2 previews ..403
But Yesterday all was well thru dozen odd posts
If not logged in, about three previews will provoke it.
Seems to be something squarespace did intentionally and screw any inconvenience to users.
I've had enough.
I'm going to bugger off and stay away until it's gone for good.
Bye.
Squarespace have got themselves in a mess, but it would appear they have a workaround, I have no idea what it is but for me, at present, it works, numerous comments and previews no longer invoke '403'
At the onset of '403' the Bish suggested
I did and it resulted in an email trail capable of choking a whole UN official delegation! Mostly repetitive and inane!
The trail ended with the following message
" Hi there xxxx,Appreciate you getting back to us about this.
The filter would have been in place for some time but this is something that we are looking at and investigating now. Just to see if the parameters could be more flexible moving forward.
Its not something you should see on the site now. Any traffic that seems excessive within a short time frame can be interpreted as bots/spam and security measures take effect.
Would you please let us know (and include a screenshot of the message) if you ever see anything like this on the site again.
Thanks so much"
Since that message dated Nov 19 I have not been treated to '403 Forbidden' and I have tried to invoke it.
So as other folks are still experiencing the poxy '403' I assume Squarespace have eventually succeeded in "whitelisting" (their word) my IP address to circumnavigate their problem?
So I suggest if you are still experiencing issues, you hound Squarespace quoting ticket no 791514. Then take a deep breath and try to enjoy the long and winding road.
Two other comments:-
1. Via copies of emails I know Andrew has been working hard to try and get this sorted.
2. Just for info I am a registered member of the site. I don't know if this is relevant to the 'fix' I may or may think I have got? But for sure using the 'preview' facility to check comment links appeared to exasperate the '403' issue.
I hope the above helps, so far, I have been '403' free for 2 days, still too early to call?
Is everybody getting 403 messages or just a sub set? I've not suffered but then I haven't posted that much. For reference I use Firefox with cookies and tracking turned off.
It's still there if you do about three Previews.

Tossers.
It's crap quality that this issue appeared at all, it's crap beyond belief that it was implemented intentionally by squarespace, and it's crap utterly beyond belief that it is still there after more than two weeks.
I detest being subjected to crap quality.
Years back, I realised that the way to avoid crap quality is simply to keep clear of services and products whose quality is crap.
As I said above, I'm off. I'll check this thread from time to time for news that it has been dealt with but, apart from that, I'll be keeping clear of the BH website.
Martin A has my sympathy especially when I see
Hi there xxxx, Appreciate you getting back to us about this.and
Just to see if the parameters could be more flexible moving forward.Which puts us squarely in the land of management flannel, aka "I have been told to say this but (a) I don't really know what it means, and (b) it's only to shut you up anyway."
Any traffic that seems excessive within a short time frame can be interpreted as bots/spam and security measures take effect. So any popular blog which attracts the sort of level of comment that this one does is going to fall foul of some arbitrary limit which Squarespace decides, in its
A for Effort when it comes to trying to keep their clients' sites secure.
E for Ability to do so properly.
I didn't have any problems until I used the Preview Post and Make Changes buttons 3 time. It's like it's seeing those as full posts and triggering the multiple post spam filter.
The same was still happening to me ~two days ago: Three edits/previews was sufficient to trigger it without even attempting to post. I got some similar response from squarespace. It still seems to me that they need to properly identify why a user needs to apply to them to get white-listed, i.e. what causes the problem in the first place, and will it come back, and what happens from a different IP address?
I've had a quick search around the web and not seen any complaints elsewhere about squarespace spam filters in the last month, so what makes BH users so special to be (possibly) singled out?
