And his language about getting the economy up and running by Easter, 'packed churches' and so forth is the exact opposite of what the epidemiology tells us will save lives.

But, read a bit further down: “The difference between the fish tank cleaning additive the couple took and the drug used to treat malaria…” Get it? (As an aside, no doubt this mug will go down as yet another “victim” of the virus, and the stats will be twisted yet further… 🙄)

Missed the point RR. The media were bashed for stating that the drug is dangerous when abused, this is the case: it can be lethal at just twice the therapeutic dose. I said there would be nutters getting it off the internet.
There is indeed cause for cautious optimism about hydroxychloroquine + supplements. It is not a cure, but may reduce the number of people requiring hospitalisation and the length of stay.
But there is a difference between a proper randomised double blind clinical trial and anecdotal evidence, after all most people get better on their own. That said, French Professor Didier Raoult has had a study accepted for publication, it was small, 24 individuals, not blind and some have found fault with the methodology. But if the results were correct and if it can be scaled up, it may help.

The dose is the key - if the cretins in the media were actually responsible players then the thing to do is to lay out the dose and warn against overdosing = medicinal quinine products are only lightly regulated and are widely available without prescription.
A quick/trivial search seems to indicate that there is a food safety limit of 83mg/litre for tonic water vs. 500/1000mg for a "standard" therapeutic dose. (i.e. possibly a fatal amount of water....) Toxicological effects, LD50 etc are out there as are details of the not insignificant side effects in some people.
What is clear is that it has shown significant activity against some coronaviruses and in the present circumstances that is pretty important. The irresponsible reporting is inexcusable in the reports I saw they showed pharma packaged quinine product - when a more appropriate analogy would perhaps be drinking a bottle of Domestos to cure toenail fungus.
Given that in other reporting much has been made of triage procedures (over 60?, overweight , chronic respiratory condition etc.) - the availability of a cheap (and it is cheap) treatment of some known efficacy (and related pharmacology) against coronavirus seems a good thing and informing people is the way to go.... - but hey - if you're going to put your TDS goggles on then one failing of Trumps Coronavirus Task Force is omitting to specify the dosage conditions when anybody can see that in the melee people are going to panic / pounce on a cure and abuse it.
So there you are Phil, over 60, showing early onset symptoms of coronarvirus infection (tested positive even) - and you have the opportunity to take a quinine product and the hospital is full of acute cases hissing and puffing into plastic bags - do you say nooo ... "I can't take that as it hasn't been double blind tested, published and peer reviewed / rubber stamped against this virus".
- and it's all Trump's fault....
