Discussion > Yorkshire Post's war on fracking

The Yorkshire Post frontpage headline
Farmers : Hand us funds to save the Climate

In the words of Bob Geldoff
"Just send us your effing money"

They basically cutNpasted from this tweet
Nature Friendly Farming Network @NFFNUK
NEW REPORT: Today we launch a report
that reveals farmers across the UK
need urgent support* to respond to the climate emergency
and transition to a sustainable farming system.

Mark has found a New BBC Fracking article with open comments

@MH "[BBC have opened a Have Your Say on that story
- a surprisingly large number of comments have been made (and supported) in favour of fracking,
not least pointing out that it's greener than importing gas]."

No the highest upvote is 38
So 38 accounts are upvoting ..as ever the actual number of readers will be a bit higher
but it maybe as little as 100-500 ..not much out of 60 million popn

The top 3 comments are antifrackers but the 3 pro fracking are not far behind

One Example of antifracking

We literally have 11 or so years left to change our ways,
otherwise the planet will no longer be inhabitable for future generations,
and all people in the comment section want to do is bash Jeremy Corbyn.
This has nothing to do with Corbyn or the election, this needs to be condemned and stopped as a part of securing our planets long term future.

The shortsightedness of some is infuriating.

Pro fracking

Banning Fracking is crazy and anti-green.
UK will consume gas until 2050 at least, mostly imported.
Imported gas emits the same CO2 when burned,
but also has transportation costs and emissions,
so UK fracked gas will reduce emissions.
Unless gas consumption in UK is eliminated, fracking makes sense.
And it's safe - the earthquakes are minor
- at worst no more than vibration from a heavy lorry.

"We would only ever change our position if both the science supported it and communities wanted it."
.. Isn't exactly an unreasonable position.
Personally I'd rather frack and burn our own gas than buy it from somewhere like Putin's Russia or Saudi.
And both of these are on 23 upvotes
The natural gas obtained from fracking is one of the cleanest burning hydrocarbons. It may be another 20 years or so before enough green power schemes are up and running to provide most of our energy. In the meantime, we need natural gas.
Fracking provides scientific, technical, construction and support jobs.
The technology is tested and proven.
Better to have our own gas than rely on imports
If all the anti fracking protesters and greens agree to stop driving
and refuse to take flights
then there will be no need to frack for gas and oil.
Will they I doubt it.

Pg13 is divided in two
- Tory EA minister Thereasa Villiers writes about the floods
long article but all about prevention, climate change is not mentioned

- Labour candidate Alex Sobel writes
" Climste Crisis demands urgent action
.. Attenborough says we cannot be radical enough.."
Sobels article mentions climate change 20 times

Tuesday front page
: Leeds citizens' jury says 'We must lead revolution for environment'
City should act on transport and housing to fight CC
"drastic measures must be taken to avert crisis
Taking the buses back into public ownership.."

Sounds like the usual anti-capitalists reds pretending to be greens.
Who are they ??
".the 21 strong jury put together by the Leeds Climate Commission, was selected through a process to make it representative .."
LCC is chaired by Prof Andy Gouldson
He said the 6 who were initially not so concerned
"a majority have changed" ..emm he means 4 of the 6 ?

Monday : a confusing article reports that North Yorkshire Council has put out a draft Air Quality plan for next 25 years
It then bangs on about how deadly air pollution is
FFS no one dies of air pollution there .. it's all National Parks and Scarborough beach etc.

Then I realise they have suddenly gone into repeating the Centre for Cities alarmist report
.. well yes York is a small city ... but over the county air pollution isn't that relevant.
