Union chief in call to farmers to help cut gas emissions
Yorkshire Post5 Jul 2019
EVERY FARMER has a role to play in the industry’s bid to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2040, farming leader Minette Batters says.
The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) president also warns that the Government must provide incentives to help farmers achieve the ambitious goal.
The NFU announced its ambition for the industry to achieve “net zero” emissions by 2040 earlier this year – a goal which is 10 years ahead of the new legal target for the country as a whole to reach zero emissions by 2050.
Ms Batters is speaking at a conference today hosted by the NFU and Sustainable Food Trust, which will see industry leaders, scientists and policy makers discuss what is needed to deliver “climate-friendly food for all”.
She will say: “Climate change is the greatest and most compelling challenge facing society today and each and every one of us has a part to play to mitigate the climate threat.
“For farmers, this means tackling the climate challenge head on – adapting the way we produce food to help deliver a greener planet for us all.”
The net zero target “does not need to impact net farm income, and certainly doesn’t mean downsizing production or exporting our production abroad”, Ms Batters will tell the conference.
Increasing efficiency of production, capturing more carbon on farmland by restoring soils and planting new farm woods, and boosting bionenergy and renewables will help meet the target, the NFU says.
But Ms Batters warns that effective incentives are going to be vital in each of these areas.//
That NFU woman is a massive climate alarmist
The ASA have ruled on a challenge to FoE’s claims about fracking:
http://www.asa.org.uk/rulings/friends-of-the-earth-ltd-A17-401802n.html
FoE won, thanks to a very well resourced and argued defence.
Looks like FoE threw something of the order of £100,000 at that ... possibly even as much as twice that amount.
Whoever made the complaint obviously hadn't reckoned on a war chest like that.
PS I know how much the reports cited usually cost

The print title is : To safeguard our future, we have to ban fracking
BAN Fracking. These are the words that should be on the lips of every environmental activist, campaigner and politician in the UK. If fracking gets a foothold, our commitment to a fossil fuel-dependent economy will be sealed for decades. If that happens, the UK can kiss all climate change targets goodbye.
It is now crystal clear – and generally accepted – that developing any unconventional oil and gas industry in the UK will result in unacceptable negative impacts on the environment, local communities and democracy, energy security, health and existing economies, especially at a time when the Government should, instead, be urgently developing policies and infrastructure to provide a clean and sustainable carbon- free vision for Britain that is so desperately needed.
...
In the current climate emergency, fracked gas has no place as a bridging fuel in the country’s much-needed transition to a low-carbon economy and the industry is far from ever going to meet the tests set out by the Committee for Climate Change.
....
If we are to be serious about tackling climate change, then it is imperative that every method at our disposal is used to halt fracking and to ensure it does not gain a foothold in the UK. Climate change needs to be tackled urgently and fracking is the clear and present environmental danger right now in the UK.
