Discussion > Covid 19 stuff

SEATTLE (June 24, 2020) – In its first projections comparing different actions to control COVID-19 transmission, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington is forecasting nearly 180,000 in the United States will die by October 1.

The forecast shows 179,106 deaths (with a range of 159,497 to 213,715). Those numbers drop to 146,047 (with a range of 140,849 to 153,438), if at least 95 percent of people wear masks in public.

Trump bucks the trend and says something true:

We’re asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance, wear a mask. Get a mask, whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact. They’ll have an effect, and we need everything we can get.”

Q: When and where do you wear a mask?

Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases: It dominates everything I do. The only time I don’t wear one is when I am alone, when I am home with my wife, or when I am speaking in public — provided there is 6 feet between me and the people to whom I am speaking, as was the case when I answered questions at the recent Congressional hearings.

(Footnote: You may remember Tomo falsely reporting Fauci as saying mask wearing was now 'symbolic', but then by his own admission Tomo will post stuff up that he knows to be bollocks if it suits his biases. )

You still haven't explained your fast access to bogus science on Coronavirus. Is it from the same sources you get your faked up Climate Science from?

A high degree of compliance will maximise the impact of universal masking in public. The global shortage of surgical masks and N95 respirators is a serious concern. In line with the recent recommedation by US CDC for healthy people to wear a cloth face cover in public [14], we strongly support the use of cloth masks as a simple, economic and sustainable alternative to surgical mask as a means of source control for general community use, so that disposable surgical masks and N95 respirators can be reserved for use in health care facilities. Such intervention is likely to be life-saving in many resource limited settings.

Use of N95 or face masks by those exposed to infected individuals was associated with a large reduction in risk of infection (AR 3.1% with face mask vs. 17.4% with no face mask), with stronger associations in health care settings compared with non–health care settings.

And how to unlock ourselves.

Panicked by fears manufactured by the ruling class, the American people assented to being put essentially under house arrest until further notice, effectively suspending the habits, preferences, and liberties that had defined our way of life. Most Americans have suffered economic damage. Many who do not enjoy protected status have had careers ended and been reduced to penury. Social strains and suicides multiplied. Forcibly deferring all manner of medical care is sure to impose needless suffering and death. In sum, the lockdowns’ medical and economic dysfunctions make for multiples of the deaths and miseries of the COVID-19 virus itself.

Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza

Clipe - Single study, small sample size, poor adherence to protocol.

The balance of evidence shows masks do make a difference.

Masks make a difference ..... if only to raise awareness.... "Balance of evidence" at the moment isn't something I'd bet the farm on -

Quantifying that difference (using decimal points no less!) and attributing the mask itself as a direct mechanism looks like a futile exercise as mask wearing is a strong behavioural modifier and sensibly - given what it says on the packaging of most masks produced for professional medical use >> the "face covering" itself isn't particularly effective at stopping viruses any more than it would be protecting from Novichok. Surgical face masks are proffered as being a method to *reduce* infection from medics to patients. Don't look at post operative infection rates on a per hospital unit basis huh?

Containment is the first step - the lessons from the Far East seem as clear as can be.

Mandating masks at one minute to midnight makes it look like "something must be done" is at play and as the virus subsides it's being lined up by some as look! - masks work! Protect the NHS !

Most of us have been fairly lucky this time - I know 3 people who've seriously self isolated - with zero interest from their GPs or anybody else tasked with providing support for fighting the spread.

In all it's been an utter shambles across the board with little good to point at.

PHE demanding Toblerones be smaller to reduce Covid-21 - well, we'll have to stomach a lot more of that sort of fuckwittery - climate change has already been fingered as a factor after all....

Surprise surprise.

You know what YouTube video is still up from 2 months ago though?

Given the very obvious sabre rattling of the CCP and my on the ground experience in HK itself - a rise in Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong is a worrying development.

I hope the WHO is in there taking samples for independent sequencing....

I see the star of the pro-hydroxychloroquine video that Tomo and various Trumps are so keen on believes that disease is caused by dream sex with demons, alien DNA is routinely used in surgery, and there's a secret conspiracy to produce a vaccine against religiosity.

She also spreads disinformation on COVID. Really not sure promoting such fringe crap is helpful during a deadly pandemic

Hey ho. Freedom of speech and all that

Never been to Nigeria have you Phil?

She have some exceeding whacky opinions - and you've actually repeated the tamest ones! - I'm shocked - but unsurprised that you've scampered out to lob some insults (I miss it - and cannot resist a bit of kitten + laser )

Bottom line though is that she is a licensed, practising and *insured* MD - unlike, as I understand it - a certain Dr. Fauci. - I could say more but you get the drift.

If I got malaria I know which of the two I'd want to treat me.

You should take a West African holiday and check out some witch-doctors.

elsewhere

wierdly ... Lewis Goodall on BBC #newsnight blames the government for following the science too much.

"The difference between the number of people who have got it and the number of the people who have died of it is so confusing"

- Ms Maitlis is looking a bit haggard.

Clearly being a qualified doctor and religious nutjob are not mutually exclusive. Yes if I had the subject of this thread and she pushed an ineffective treatment on me as a 'cure' , I would hope she was carrying copious insurance for medical negligence. LOL.
