Discussion > President Trump
This one is just a joke; the not terribly historically alert Briton, upon being told that the British had burned Washington during the War of 1812 exclaimed 'Washington? I knew we burned Joan of Arc, but Washington?'

Queen "Bloody" Mary, did not just have a vodka and tomato juice cocktail named after her , before England knew what a tomato was, but was married to King Philip of Spain. His right to call himself King of England under Papal Law (?) was valid, until Mary's death. Her Protestant sister Elizabeth was Queen, by the time Philp launched his armada.
The marriage was consumated, and Mary was thought to be pregnant. This turned out to be hot air, though historians were less polite after her death.
The destruction of the Spanish Armada was caused by a storm, that would today, be blamed on Global Warming. I wonder if failed Climate Science will be credited with causing another Little Ice Age?
I went to Queen Mary College, London in the 1960s. Periodically there would be stupid competitions (like a kids' scooter race London to Brighton) between the London Colleges, during which attempts were made to capture other Colleges' mascots. Our deadly rivals - Kings once captured our mascot - a large lion sculpture. It was returned after payment of a charity donation but it had been painted in Kings colours - bright red. When it was displayed in its all its war paint at a Queen Mary union meeting (attended by hundreds) , one wag brought the house down by yelling out "Bloody Mary". I suppose you had to be there.
Happy Days.
12% of Americans believe Joan of Arc was Noah's wife.
Apologist for a liar, not a good look. The millions of illegal voters are as real as the millions Lying Don saw cheering his inauguration. He relayed the lie as fact because he cannot bear to lose, even as his approval rating circles the plughole.
HTH.
HTH Phil - very ambiguous:
Hope This Helps (unlikely?)
Hand To Heart (really?)
Happy To Help (?)
President Obama believed 97% of Climate Scientists.
Phil. Don't you find it so dispiriting to be debating those here who are so so knowledgeable about all subjects - the inner thoughts and feelings of the British working man regarding the BBC to Trump's real meaning when he screws up?Don't undersell yourselves Super, you're both much cleverer than you think. You must be taking humility pills.
Strange though that you would assume a BH regular wouldn't know anything about the thoughts of the working classes, what led you to believe that?
As for Trump I have never excused him at all, except to point out that the news coming from Sweden was not all good. Whether it's an epidemic or not I don't know, but there have been a rise in sex crimes and there are almost daily reports of rape emanating from Sweden.
BTW I have two daughters who work in QMU, I must check with them to see if the've done anything to improve the quality of the output over the years.
Geronimo
1) not humility pills, but sarcastic capsules.
2) "Strange though that you would assume a BH regular wouldn't know anything about the thoughts of the working classes, what led you to believe that?" Please read more carefully or do not edit. I questioned BH regulars knowledge of the INNER thoughts.
3) if you read through my contributions you will discover that I consistently criticised Trump's comment about a non event in Sweden and his utter failure to apologize for his error. I know nothing about immigration problems in Sweden, except for what I have read in Mankell's Wallender novels.
4) I forgot to mention the the Queen Mary lion was obviously male, so there was an additional component to the joke of calling the reddened mascot Bloody (queen) Mary. No doubt today the wag would have been severely reprimanded for making such a gender-specific comment.
kim, "jure uxoris" (see Wikipedia) was how King Philip of Spain became King of England.
Whether getting President Obama to quote Cook's fabricated Consensus was supposed to unite the Pope and Prince Charles in a similar manner is unclear, but Climate Science has always depended on 97% lies and false attribution.
Minty, was the college named after Queen Mary I (aka Bloody Mary) or Queen Mary II, the (to date, only) co-regnant (1688 – 1694) with her husband, William III (aka William of Orange)?
The latter does seem to be the more likely, as she was appointed as part of the Glorious Revolution; surely a more fitting example than that given by our last Catholic queen, known for her harsh methods in trying to re-establish the Papal authority over this country?
Ravishing Rattie Friend Wikki confirms that the College was named after Mary of Teck, wife of George V. The original buildings were a variety theatre and community centre for that part of East London - at that time staunchly monarchist. The huge union meetings were held in the old music hall.
Just remember the tense, 'what is happening'. It still hasn't stopped, and won't until denial ceases.

For the record, here are President Trump's actual words on 2/18/17 (Note: no mention of terrorist attack etc. That was fake news, fabricated by the media but immediately accepted as fact by the victims of collective Munchausen and mass hysteria. Of whom there are at least a couple commenting here.)
...You look at what's happening in Germany. You look at what's happening - last night** - in Sweden. Sweden! Who would have believed this! Sweden! They took in large numbers. They are having problems like they never thought possible. You look at what's happening in Brussels. You look at what's happening all over the world...

Not to be confused with RMS Queen Mary, and RMS Queen Mary 2, as these were named after the not-so-bloody Queen Mary, who married the Dutch King of England, whereas Queen Mary was married to King Philip of Spain who wanted his Dutch subjects to help him invade England.
Soap opera plotlines are quite simple when compared with the British Monarchy.
Whoa, timing!. Thanks, HRC. Can we be charitable and admit that this 'couple' are simply not being charitable in their search for the meaning of Trump's words?

Trump knows 97% of Climate Scientists are liars.
What is fake about that?
** Fox News Sweden Government Covering Up Immigrant Rape & Crime - Ami Horowitz - Tucker Carlson Tonight 2/17/17
That's right - Lying Don passes on fake news as readily as he does fake tweets.
The controversial segment from a film by filmmaker Ami Horowitz, which was shown on Fox News on Friday and claimed immigration had led to a rise in crime in Sweden, made headlines after Trump (much to the surprise of Swedes) used the Nordic country as a cautionary tale in a speech on Saturday. But two Stockholm-based police officers featured in the clip, talking about crime and the accessibility of weapons, have sharply criticized how they were portrayed and how their quotes were used in the interview.
"I don't understand why we are part of the segment. The interview was about something completely different to what Fox News and Horowitz were talking about," one of the police officers, Anders Göranzon, told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper on Monday. "It was supposed to be about crime in high risk areas. Areas with high crime rates. There wasn't any focus on migration or immigration."
After Paul Watson tweeted 'Any journalist claiming Sweden is safe, I will pay for travel costs and accommodator for you to stay in crime ridden migrant suburbs of Malmo' journalist Tim Pool (TimCast on Twitter) is there now. It looks a lot like Marylebone.
In one film he makes a sidetrip to Rosengard, described upthread as a no-go area for journalists. At around 7:00 his companion observes that the most dangerous thing about the area are the untreated pavements.
Hmmm, I'm so glad it didn't look like Rotherham.

Heh, watch Phil help Anders Goranzon try to put one and one together. Can you believe it, Alan?

Trump was fully aware of how his words had been interpreted and did little to nothing to correct any "misunderstanding". Difficult to believe the "revisionist" spin, when he went on to list localities where terrorism outrages had occurred. Also a transcript fails to convey the stresses placed on the words. The simplest explanation is that he made a simple error, but he is too arrogant and pig headed to admit it. Thus it joins an ever increasing list of outright lies. It would have been so very easy to correct any misunderstanding, but he failed to admit error, so compounding the problem.
To me the origin of this whole matter has assumed a lesser importance. More interesting is the convolutions Trump supporters go to, to explain away the obvious failings of their idol. His assumed stance on climate change excuses mountains of abuse and error.
Golf charlie. Even more made up news!
The correct parallel, Alan, is that when I see what Trump does in climate and energy, and compare that with how his efforts are presented in the press, then I can reasonably assume that he's being similarly misrepresented on other matters of which I have little knowledge. Furthermore, the little knowledge that I do have in other areas, suggests that he is doing the right thing there, too. Like, for instance, pulling Great Britain off of the end of the queue.
=============
You are simply wrong, Alan. Trump or someone in his posse early explained that 'last night' referred to the news special. It's easy to call something a lie when you uncharitably refuse to try to understand what has been said.
=========
Heh, didn't know that, but I was astounded recently to learn that the man who launched the Spanish Armada against Great Britain had once been King of England.
