Discussion > President Trump

This one of those occasions where I consider it prudent to cease arguing. I have made my pitch and it crashed and burned. Enjoy your prejudices.

And then comes the question of enthusiasm or, more accurately, the lack of it. Just one in five Americans feels enthusiastic about Biden. This figure does rise to 40% among his own supporters but even that raises an awkward point — not even a majority in Biden’s own camp feel enthused about his candidacy. This should ring alarm bells.

For one thing, these are eerily similar to Clinton’s numbers in the final polls four years ago, when just 19% of voters and 41% of her voters felt this way. And for another they contrast sharply with Trump; while closer to one in three Americans feel enthused about the incumbent this rockets to nearly three-quarters of his own supporters.

Really? Here are the approval ratings.

As for 'enthusiasm', far be it from me to contradict a Professor of politics, but he seems to be using the Economist/YouGov poll.

For candidate enthusiasm Biden has 24% (47% amongst Democratic voters) 'enthusiastic' while Trump scores 29% (69% Republicans). In 2016 Clinton had 19%(40%) enthusiastic while Trump had 21%(42%).

Not sure if the characterisation entirely matches the data (24%=one-in-five? 69%=nearly three quarters?). Also, the opposite of 'enthusiastic' in this poll is 'Upset'. Across all voters in 2016 Trump had 'upset' 47%, Clinton 46%.

The numbers show the same proportion upset by Trump in 2020, but so far only 31% are upset by Biden.

If Biden can flip Michegan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin he wins, his current poll leads in those states are 7.1%, 4.4% and 6.5% respectively. This does not mean he will win, it just shows how much the Donald has to do.

Still no evidence of any actual wrongdoing then. Hint: making officials feel 'awkward' is not yet a crime.

"The Treasury records acquired by the Chairmen show potential criminal activity relating to transactions among and between Hunter Biden, his family, and his associates with Ukrainian, Russian, Kazakh and Chinese nationals. In particular, these documents show that Hunter Biden received millions of dollars from foreign sources as a result of business relationships that he built during the period when his father was vice president of the United States and after. In addition to providing new and descriptive details about the nature, origin and extent of payments from Burisma Holdings to Hunter Biden, the documents acquired by the Committees also shed light on a much broader array of questionable financial transactions involving Hunter Biden, other members of the Biden family, and their associations with foreign nationals. These foreign nationals have questionable backgrounds that have been identified as being consistent with a range of criminal activities, including but not limited to organized prostitution and/or human trafficking, money laundering, fraud, and embezzlement."

I suppose there is an "awkward" aspect to this.

Sep 23, 2020 at 9:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterCharly

Well quite, 'potential criminal', 'consistent with'. Weasel words. They've spent months and $thousands, If they had actual evidence of corruption or criminality they would present it. The report runs to 87 pages, is nakedly political, and has revealed nothing remotely illegal. For example:

on a much broader array of questionable financial transactions involving Hunter Biden, other members of the Biden family, and their associations with foreign nationals.

'Questionable' why? because the Republicans say so? No fewer than three Ukranian Attorneys General have said Hunter was not implicated in anything illegal. So the report makes stuff up :-

Hunter Biden received a $3.5 million wire transfer from Elena Baturina, the wife of the former mayor of Moscow

The source being a 'confidential document'. The payment was not to Biden, it was to a company he co-founded and in which he holds a small stake. No evidence is presented that the money went to Hunter. Not exactly honest, there.

Hunter Biden opened a bank account with Gongwen Dong to fund a $100,000 global spending spree with James Biden and Sara Biden.

Hunter Biden had business associations with Ye Jianming, Gongwen Dong, and other Chinese nationals linked to the Communist government and the People’s Liberation Army. Those associations resulted in millions of dollars in cash flow.

Businessman has bank account. Stop the presses. Doing business with the Chinese is bad now? Anyone told the Trump Organisation?

On the only remotely substantive charge - influencing US policy on Ukraine - the report contradicts itself, alleging that

Hunter Biden’s position on Burisma’s board was problematic and did interfere in the efficient execution of policy with respect to Ukraine

and alleging that he and other Biden relatives cashed in on Joe Biden’s vice presidency.

But, where you might expect some evidence, they come up empty -

the extent to which Hunter Biden’s role on Burisma’s board affected U.S. policy toward Ukraine is not clear
.

Pure mist. What a waste of time and money. Or to quote Esquire:-

Of course, it's "not clear." It's not supposed to be "clear." It's supposed to be all smoke and no fire. It's supposed to be all wind and no rain. That way, its "findings" can be used to prove almost anything. If the "findings" were precise and explicit, they could be easily debunked, and we can't have that, now can we? But the hazier the details, the less there is for fact-checkers to grab hold of. You can claim that the "report" says anything you want it to say. And if you blow enough smoke, you can obscure the fact that Senator Johnson is quite the tool.

Have you really not noticed that Trump appointed his daughter and her husband to senior White House positions (personally granting security clearance), refuses to disclose his personal finances and stays involved in the Trump Organisation, a business which during his term has received 1 million taxpayer dollars for hotel rooms alone?

There will be more in coming days. Louisville "leaders" have NO ONE to blame but themselves. No Justice, No Peace is not just a catchy slogan anymore - it's the People's Battle Cry against the authoritarian regime of @realDonaldTrump, @senatemajldr and their Russian Master Putin!

Trump just claimed the Bidens stole $3.5 million from Russia. Either this is an amazing coincidence or he is losing track of his smears and is referring to the Chinese money that the above report falsely alleged went to Hunter B.

The cognitive decline is palpable.

hmmm indeed.

When one side (the Democrat Party and allies) has spent four years comparing the other side to Hitler, and concocting ridiculous lies about Russian collusion for impeachment purposes, it does make one wonder what their "October Surprise" is going to look like.

Phil, is it only now that you have noticed?

My cognitive decline is well-advanced.

I like to think that I gain in wisdom. Please leave me with this hope.

Sep 24, 2020 at 8:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterCharly

Yeah, I conflated the fake Chinese claim with the fake Russian claim in my head, I was just checking when I realised I had hit Confirm instead of Preview. An embarrassing error and I am duly embarrassed.

We all make mistakes. Some of us admit them. Please ignore.

The point remains, Trump's claim that Biden stole $3.5 million from anyone is BS. But then truth long since ceased being a player in US Politics. We are through the looking glass.

The second most painful symptom of cognitive decline is a compulsion to correct factual errors in the moribund blog of a Scottish climate-change denying accountant.

The final stages are indicated by a need to blame, with zero evidence, all of the world's ills on climate scientists in general and Michael Mann in particular.
