I remember thinking at the time that there was motive and opportunity, but I now realize motive was only half there. I do still see sympathy for the poor, however, as motive.
================
Don. To be perfectly honest I get somewhat embarrassed when people talk about the difficulties I must have faced. Truth be told it wasn't that difficult. I had the support of many within my School, and developed a cohort of undergraduates each year who appreciated being treated as adults (if only for a one hour lecture). My fossil fuels module was year on year the largest teaching module in the School's undergraduate programme and some students had to be turned away. I was respected by my geological peers and loved my job. I did not learn of much of CRU's amnity until Climategate2. and as I have explained I was treated with kid gloves after Climategate1.
Kim. Her question was answered negatively and honestly at the time. Opportunity and motive was not accompanied by competence.
Heh, heh, and thanks, Alan. You are still a hero.
==========
Yeah, I presumed 'means' at the time, too.

AK:
Ludite eos- novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius.
Russell. You must be more helpful to someone whose language skills are almost non existent. I once managed 7% in a french exam. There was no way I was ever going to be exposed to Latin.
Minty: Google translates this to: "Play eos – for the Lord knows those who are his." Still no idea what it means, though. I do wonder if Russell does...
Perhaps it means he is having a jibe at you for blowing your own trumpet – a “fault” that, it would seem, only he should be allowed to indulge in, as only he does it for reasons other than pure vanity.
Of course, I could be wrong – after all, what do I know…?
Ravishing Rabbit. Thank you. And I thought I was trying to show I'm unworthy of some of the plaudits coming my way. Perhaps I'll box my trumpet for a while.
Heh! Thank you for the compliment (what are you after?); however, I am probably more ravished than ravishing – or just plain ravaged. Also, rabbits are lagomorphs, not rodents; perhaps you meant Maudlin Mara? (Please, keep beavers out of this…)
No, your snippets of personal history were suitably low-key, but there are some… no, make that many – far, far too many… who cannot stand the thought of someone doing something that they feel they should have done, but didn’t. This is why so many successful people suffer so much public opprobrium; it is one biggest failures of our modern society – the politics of envy is rife. As far as I am concerned, you may blow to your heart’s content.
Ravished ratty (don't know of another rodent beginning with r). I hope ratty is kinder. I want nothing other than continued conversations here. Do rodents engage in mutual back scratching?
Langomorphs were once considered rodents until someone counted teeth, and I am old fashioned.
If you can't figure it out , ask Monckton.
Russell. No. I asked you, exposing my weakness. If you wish to still remain all mysterious and clever clever, be my guest. I have never gotten pleasure from solving cryptic puzzles. So enjoy being superior.
It isn't at all cryptic -it's a ludicrous Latin pun on 'Caedite eos'
Russell. Your explanation is still not cathartic.
Friends! (And Friend Bishop, where art thou? We're missing you :( ) Well, you're not going to believe this, friends! Jeremy has written a special Guest Blog for my Blog! Admittedly, his style may seem a little "flat" compared with mine, but nonetheless, it's all food for thought, isn't it?
https://supportourjeremy.wordpress.com/2016/07/29/exclusive-a-special-guest-blog-from-a-very-special-guest-written-specially-for-you-all-by-jeremy-himself-friends/
Minty: I can go off people who use the word "gotten"...
My, aren't you the clever one! You can say things in Latin... but seem unwilling (or unable?) to explain it. How odd.Ravishing Ratty. You must excuse my occasional slippage into North Americaneze (and spelling) where this older english form is still employed. You clearly are not from the west country either because your education was not gotten there. I shall refrain from using "getten" which would be quite pretentious.
I have given up on Russell (who I wonder is a Jacobite) but did find an interesting story on Wikip. on the origin of the original quotation. Apparenty it has been reused by the American military when they can't tell friend from foe.
Just to say, I am still watching here and returning often in the hope of a revival. As a long time follower and (sometimes) active participant, I look forward in hope to our host taking up the baton again.
In the meantime, best wishes to all,
ThinkingScientist
Ravishing Rattie.
Just returned from walking my Scottie in the park. I often get the time to think then, since catering to her desires is stress free and calming. Today I thought that by using a free translation, Russells pun might make some sense -
"Let all play. The Lord [Bish?] will sort them out" [on his return?].
What I don't understand is why Russell directed his post to me. Looking back, my posts were about 1) getting EM to behave better (but a long way back), 2) discussions with Don Keiller about Antarctica and FIO problems, which led to 3) reminiscing and reflecting on Climategate. Hardly playing about, so I can't discern a connection.
Will probably be a huge letdown if we ever find out.
Ah. You are probably right. I read “eos” as “the wind”, hence the allusion to blowing a trumpet. Yes, I have read your interesting posts; other than those that could be construed – if you screw your eyes up right, and tilt your head a bit – as trumpet-blowing (mind you, even then, you have to ignore whether or not it is self-praise, and then question its validity as self-praise). Curious that such a person should offer such an ecclesiastical reference; his general past behaviour has not been what one would consider exemplary of a Christian.
Ravishing Rattie. I hope you don't read all my posts like that - with screwed up eyes and tilted head. You won't get laughter lines because you don't like my humour (haven't I been good lately?).
Perhaps there has been a modicum of brass blowing, boasting of havng the most popular undergraduate module and having a coterie of students (Kendall's Kids I heard them called one year). But these are things I was inordinately proud of and I only gained them right towards the end of my teaching career. So I think you were being kind to overlook such boasting.
Good to interact with you again.
Sorry, I lost the thread of my own argument in mid-sentence in that post. Now, I have no idea where I was going… please, don’t ask me what caused the distraction. However, I do not consider your reminiscences boasting at all – oh, and it’s not so much that I do not like your sense of humour, it’s just that I am waiting for you to show you have one, hard as you are working to display one! (Naturally, I discount out-of-hand the possibility that it could be me that has no sense of humour.)
Yes, I, too, enjoy our gentle ripostes and repartee.
Only just noticed the rider on the cartoon that "no Labour leaders were harmed during the making of the cartoon". What a pity!
Heh, it's during the 'viewing' that they are harmed.
========
Josh. In the light of what kim writes (11.39am) can we have cartoons of EU leaders?
All getting too weird.
Anyway now in New Hampshire, chilling out with a cold beer.
CBA!
re Lucy...

Maybe if Hilary Clinton had voted differently that U S Moslem soldier would not have been in Iraq in the first place
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2016-36936692
Maybe if George W Bush along with Bill Clinton and Al Gore had also heeded their intelligence assessments not withdrawn Federal Funding for Avaition Surcurity there would not have been 9 11
Maybe if President Obama and Hilary Clinton had heeded their intelligence assessments the U S Consulant and three of his officials would still be alive and there wouldn't be an ISIS in Iraq or in Libya.
But hay blame it Climate Change and Donald Trump.
It's funny, Beth; I've got the rep, but most other skeptics who've tried poetry have better stuff. Love your efforts.

Thx, kim, doing seven deadly sins, a serf haiku overview
at the moment ...makes me think of yr
'wage, wage war against
the lying and the fright.!'
Kim, Beth
Poetry is no jousting matter.
Climate science, au contraire, is competitive juggling
with no prisoners.
Jousting yer say, AK?

Beth Cooper,
Oh yes "the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true"
But the "poetry" was used by Griselda to try to prevent a joust, which went ahead anyway with a thunderbolt deciding the issue.
But thank you for reminding me of a past pleasure. The part where Hawkins changes from an incompetent to a fencing master at the snap of fingers is classic.
AK
Yes. I must watch it all again.
Irish provisuonal energy balance out.
The rise of jet kerosene consumption is epic.
Now close to pre bubble highs.
Y2012 : 765 ktoe (post bust nadir)
Y2014: 970ktoe
Y2015: 1,140 ktoe.
Ireland is the only Oecd country where jet kerosene inputs grossky exceed gasoline inputs.
I include the much more isolated islands of New Zealand and Iceland.
The larger the gap between prices and income the stranger a countries energy balance becomes.
Ireland is prepping itself up for another bankruptcy event.
Yesterday we saw six white tailed deer and a black bear (not at the same time) in the back garden of our holiday house in New Hampshire. The owners tell me this is "unprecedented".
Maybe it is because of global warming?
Today I counted six. (SIX!) flies in our living room. 100% unprecidented!
Global.warming, or has my granddaughter left the outside door open again?
Well, I wonder if this post will get.. posted?
I have made a few, quite non-controversial, posts that seem to never show up.
So this is a test, so to speak.
My comments were about how interesting the posts of AK, kim and Beth have ben lately.
Black bear in the backyard of yr holiday house in North Hampshire, Don keiller?
Unprecedented.yer say? Not unless it's maybe a mutating polar bear. Now if
it had been a unicorn in the garden ... beth the serf.
One of the fables of our time created by another James...
Thurber, not, u know, the one who created the one about sea rise !
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/92/Unicorninthegarden.jpg
Beth. Now you're not suggesting, are you, that Don should be taken away in a straitjacket, just for seeing deer and a bear from his holiday house?
I think Thurber's modern fable really depends on whether the man actually saw a unicorn, but this is rarely discussed.
Oh no AK. Jest can't resist the opportunity ter take a swipe at
cli -sci tales of fear 'n guilt.
Beth. But, but, but.... Don's climate change "suggestion" was 100%, ironic - hence my 6 flies attempt to up his irony.
Yikes!, 'N the other day I saw a dragon fly
Beth. What gorgeous essays you write. I look forward to many hours reading and thinking about them. My better half was a librarian so will be interested in your latest effort.
Gadzooks Beth! Already today I've seen a horse fly and a house fly. Yesterday I read about a scorpion fly, but I've never seen one.
