Discussion > Yorkshire Post's war on fracking
Saturday
Front-page - PM holds out £10m incentive to locals.
...that seems a rather small estimate
...Ah it's per community.
Page 6
- Homeowners may pay high price
..raises insurance
- fears for property prices
- No payouts for lorry vibration damage
. ..That's all Scaremongering !
YP is playing down the gains , playing up the fear
Third column
Begins "Process will cut reliance on energy imports"
ends with statement from National Trust.
is activists get last say.
Editorial
..bangs on about insurance risk
Monday page 2 "Insurers rule out flooding-style scheme for homes near fracking...despite fears about the likelihood of rising premiums for householders."
Then right at end quotes chief of insurers org
" ..have not seen evidence of shale gas exploration having a significant impact on premiums or of cover being declined as a result"
Letter : points out enviro protestor hypocrites are damaging local environment
..they seized a field and plonked their plastic caravans there.. And have masses of fossil fueled car journeys.
Tuesday - "Research could call fracking's environmental claims into doubt -
· The ENVIRONMENTAL case for fracking may need to be revaulated, York scientists have said, after research revealed global levels of harmful hydrocarbons in the atmosphere have been underestimated by 50%"
.. Its the normal BS contradictions : One minute the Greenblob shout the science is settled, next minute they say they underestimated something by 50%
Their argument is about ethane/methane leaks mixing with NOx from cars to make ozone.
They fail to set the context that ozone at low altitude is a health hazard, whilst at a high level its a good thing.
#1 there are many natural sources of methane leaks
#2 you are not fracking at busy traffic junctions, so the methane is well dispersed upwards before it meets NOx.
#3 The article claims ozone in countryside harms crops ...first I've heard of this.
Seems the article is again PR not science.

What about a warning thatc composting toilets could explode? It is possible, so we should ban them.
Farmers and gardeners must be exposing themselves to terrible risks when they spread manure on soil.
How do people muck out animal stabling without forced air ventilation?
Gwen. We had not appreciated that your country bumkin status came with such risks. The thought of you spread over your beloved countryside because of excessive fermentation in your closet had never surfaced. Does your yott have a composting toilet if the need overtakes you on your watery escapades, or have you gone all modern and indulge yourself chemically?
Good point GC since all decaying organic matter like compost gives off methane, its a bit rich to assert it harms crops.
Tuesdays Letters
2 - anti fracking
"Over 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific papers are have now been published which have investigated the health of communities close to fracking operations around the world.
In all cases, there is an increase in morbidity – birth defects, respiratory diseases and cancer in the local communities with a significant reduction in life"
Tosh
The PR trick of saying something precise and plausible, and people will believe it, even though it's BS.
Second letter places the race card
..if fracking is great then why's it not done in Oxfordshire, Glos, Berks
... Well you have to start somewhere.
Supertroll, us country bumpkins don't have mains drains. Yotts tend to have holding tanks. Both require care and maintenance, because "getting your own back", can have unfortunate consequences.
Aerobic was a popular rural concept, long before Jane Fonda's first video.
I don't know if a yacht has ever been sunk by a holding tank explosion, but emergency evacuation is normally necessary.
stewgreen, has anyone asked the Yorkshire Post how they imagine Yorkshire's lights will stay on? I am guessing that today they are not getting much solar, and their wind turbine blades may be a bit icy.

More research required !
one of the world’s premier institutions for inspirational and life-changing research.
I don't have a good feeling about that self promoting strapline.
Why do they feel the need to do this stuff? - is it insecurity or something?
Ah... UofY "innovation" firsts include a 5 year social science course....
A trendy plate glass university ....
The Air We Breathe - Ally Lewis - one of the authors
"Tens of billions of pounds/year NHS health impacts"
A further bunch of self serving untruths are trivially chucked in to what looks like a public lecture.
I get the distinct feeling that they will talk anything up to get funding - something that's abundantly obvious after a short wander through other departmental research.
As an aside I see that report author Lucy Carpenter's home page displays an endorsement by The Guardian for being the 2nd ranked chemistry department in the UK.
@Golf Drax are big advertisers in the yP
So they convince it that when there is no wind/solar, all you need to do is chuck more Canadian logs into Draxes fire.
Ah, yes. Why frack, when there are so many alternatives that are available?
(Have you any idea how difficult it is to find a photo of a producing fracked well? It is almost as if no-one is interested in the end result, only the mayhem in its installation. Why do we see so few pictures of the unsightly building site during the construction of now-iconic buildings compared with the completed landmark? Now, THAT is a rhetorical question!)
Wednesday Letters : 1 anti from Nina Smith of Hebden Bridge
========
After weeks of complaints against Laura Kuenssberg , 30 letters, 1 person writes in support of her.
But his perspective is strange : says YP us a Conservative newspaper, and recommends BBC & Channel4 for news.
Ah, yes. The Yorkshire Post. They have obviously had an irony by-pass, as they publish on-line stories threatening the doom of high prices caused by a shortage of gas (“Jayne Dowle: A cold sense of fear as heating bills mount up”), and opinions about the demon of fracking (“YP Letters: Theresa May fails to mention the ill effects of fracking” from Christopher Pickles, Gilling East). Very much a case of damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
Pg11 Whole page today about the specialist bailiffs who remove anti-fracking protestors.
Interestingly today they've taken a Lynn Truss speech from last week, edited it and titled it 'Tear away read tape"
..I guess that covers them against accusations they never cover Tories.
Wednesday small article.
Amendments to planning rules are out to consultation.
..saying planners have to consider positives of mineral mining etc.
Article only quotes Greenpeace.
Wednesday letters
Very long one
"Fracking will industrialise the countryside"
Signed Simon Bo.wens FoE
He quotes example of Queensland, but AFAIK fracking hasn't even started there.
You do not need to go that far south to see what impact fracking has on the countryside – what about the largest land-based oil field in Europe, where fracking has been exercised for over 30 years: Wytch Farm?
The RSPB has a few fracked sites on their reserves, too, but odd how no-one seems to be interested in those, eh?
@Radical UK may well gave old style fracked sites
But AFAIK new style slipwater fracking has still not bee started.
Thursday pg 2. : Fracking Delayed until Autumn
Third Energy had been expected to have started by Christmas 2017 in KirkbyM but seems with corp moving equipment off site ..it's been delayed again.
Does seem pathetic : Why can we not just get on with something that has been done a million times in the states already.
The UK is just a banana republic getting poorer and poor as liberal initiatives push up costs.
Mayor 'should make pollution tolls a priority'. Yorkshire Post - 2018-03-08 - REGIONAL NEWS - ROB PARSONS POLITICAL EDITOR.
WHOEVER BECOMES South Yorkshire's first directly-elected mayor should introduce a 'clean air charge' to tackle pollution as a “quick policy win” to set the tone for their time in office, according to a leading think tank (my mates)
'Centre For Cities'
@Colin True
Wednesday another 3 antifracking letters similarly incoherent.
- eg There'll be no cracking in Scotlan. NIreland so fracking is anti English.
- "it's not possible to return fracking sites to near natural state"
... Of course it is.
