Discussion > Yorkshire Post's war on fracking
Business page is headed by Drax promising Magic carbon capture
AFAIK they are actually after a subsidy grant for CCS research.
Text says "an early pilot"
it's not just fracking
today YP chooses to use hyperbolic framing language and a big "NO !" picture
"Plans to make it easier for companies to explore shale gas deposits and carry out fracking are not designed to loosen regulation of the highly controversial industry , an Energy Minister has said"
they never call windfarms controversial, never mind "highly controversial"
And on wood burner regulations they choose to make a big comment box from Caroline Lucas of the GreenParty
"Strategy 'hugely disappointing"
..coincidence cos the Guardian uses
\\ UK’s new air pollution strategy ‘hugely disappointing’, says Labour //
Lucas "thousands of people are dying from filthy air"
Tosh .. you cannot produce any death certificates and you know it
The online version yesterday had ananti-fracking letter
not seen it in the print version
https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/opinion/yp-letters-fracking-now-defying-local-democracy-1-9172639
"From: Russell Scott, Cropton, Ryedale.
THE Conservative government has announced new measures to back British shale gas exploration, a move that rides roughshod over our democracy and should be treated as a national scandal."
Ron Firths writes long letter, not condemning fracking but praising green dream
..His facts are wrong all over
ends "Why are carbon levies four times higher in UK than on continent ?"
Sue Cuthbert is against pro fracking law changes
but contradicts herself
\\ This country does not rely on Russia for gas.
This is scaremongering by people like Boris Johnson. (actually her misrepresentation)
We currently import 70 per cent of our gas from Norway and around 15 per cent from Qatar.
We are so sufficient in gas reserves that we export 30 per cent to Ireland. (she just said we import 85% of our gas, so how can we be exporting it ?)
( iexpect that actually we only import 50% on average)
As I predicted on May 19th YP did same a s airing Lawson, in that the pro fracking letter is generating an excuse to air more antifracking letters
(it was the one that pointed out the protest camp had losts of plastic and big bonfires)
Monday : "Anti-frackers demonised"
'we use plastic like everyone else'
\\ Anti-frackers demonised From: Michael Farman, Beverley.
LORRAINE Allanson (The Yorkshire Post, May 18) seems to have moved from promoting the merits of fracking to demonising the many people who are struggling to oppose it. Since the world is currently swamped with plastic products
I have no doubt that the protectors at the Kirby Misperton camp, like everyone else today, have had to make use of some.
I challenge her to prove that it is possible to do very much these days without using them. //
Tuesday : "LIKE OTHERS, I wish to take issue with Lorraine Allanson’s letter (The Yorkshire Post, May 23 and 26), which seeks to denigrate those who worked successfully to help remove Third Energy from Kirby Misperton.
Well, Stewgreen, with my grammar-Nazi hat on, at least I can be happy about someone using the word denigrate correctly.
I seem to have recently seen no end of internet comments/videos from people who appear to think that if maybe I throw stones at your greenhouse, I might be "denigrating" it. (Mostly American, true, but I'm also American by birth and like to think I'm normally tolerant of most linguistic differences.)
Letters are back
Coun Paul Andrews of Rydales writes a long antifracking letter
Also long article from Natalie Bennett mostly about how Labour should have opposed Heathrow runway expansion.
Wednesday 5th another scare story
"Mistrust could grow if fracking decisions are made nationally"
The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee has released a report into planning guidance on fracking, and has urged the government to reconsider proposals to bring applications under the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects regime.
Yorkshire Post, Page: 2
They then brag that one of their photographs of a fracking demo helped their photographer win O2 Media award Photographer of the Year
..there's nowt special about that pic tho
Not the YP but the CPRE letter in today's Times is violently antifracking
..yet the org supports wind farms
I guess its entryism and the org has been hijacked by Greenblob.
\\ @CPRE 22 Jun
The government wants to speed up #fracking & bypass local opposition. This would put our beautiful countryside at risk and dismiss communities’ wishes
Communities should decide on fracking. Sign the petition >>> (link: https://buff.ly/2kOKuIi) buff.ly/2kOKuIi & RT for awareness #FrackturedCommunities //
Yes Yorkshire Post I will mention that today you published a long pro-fracking piece from a recent politics graduate of Sheffield Uni
Samuel Ribansky: Why Brexit also means fracking if Britain is to secure energy independence
And sure enough there are 2 letters against that piece today
One quotes Lord Deben ..so that shows how poor they are
\\ One only need read the recent statement of Lord Deben, chair of the Government’s Climate Change Committee, to understand how little Mr Ribansky understands the subject. The Government has accepted a carbon budget which will not allow gas for generation in 2030, which makes fracking impossible.
//
In reality new gas power stations are under constuction right in places like Keady, Immingham etc. and will of course still be operating in 2030 cos something needs to be on standby for when the sun and wind suddenly stop like they often do
The other letter is as weak
\\ When touching upon atmospheric pollution, nothing is said about the vast volume of water that fracking requires, nor what will happen to the contaminated water. //
Scaremongering, cos most used fracking water doesn't get contaminated with any nasties and in fact can be recycled and used again.
Even if there were any things then the water could be mostly filtered.
A million fracking wells in the US and no death certificates show that anyone was killed.by pollution etc.
Thursday July 5th Sue Cuthbert got a long Anti-fracking letter along with photo of protesters
I see she had a letter in further 6 weeks ago, I mentioned above.
The bottom of the same page today had one of those large fake Smart Meter advertorials.
Cuadrilla get the go ahead in Lancs
Yorkshire Post frontpage : "Alarm bells' as fracking site given go-ahead"
online title is Yorkshire campaigners' fury as Government gives fracking go-ahead in Lancashire
Letters page
Anti-letter from : Michael Farman he quotes popularity surveys, which can be rigged dependending which question you ask
Pro-letter from : Sue Grant , claims that out of 100,000 fracking events there have been only dozen of earthquakes
..Actually even that is not true .. AFAIK the only problems came from building huge waste water dams that caused tremors.
And that in the UK that won't happen as water will be recycled.
Thursday - 3 long anti-fracking letters today
And one is from Sue Cuthbert
She lays into Lorraine Allanson who on the 21st supported cracking.
- S.second letter lays into Lorraine as well.
And third letter lays into Samuel Ribansky.
All seem to peddle untruths.
10 days after an incredibly rarelong pro-fracking piece from Samuel Ribansky, the YP gives half a page to anti-frack protesters from Ryedale ..
Russell Scott: The heatwave is further proof that fracking needs to be halted
no open comments allowed
Note on July 17th anti-frackers proclaimed war on SR's piece, I quote
\\ LETTER WRITERS ASSEMBLE!
In my years in the campaign I do believe I've never seen such a shoddy piece of "journalism".
What are the Yorkshire Post thinking? Send your thoughts to: yp.editor@ypn.co.uk
Ps. Don't worry guys, technology has moved on! //
Saturday : long anti-fracking letter from Anne Nightinggale
'oh water scary scary'
letter from David Cragg-James argues that fracking will cause "boost to global warming" & "extreme weather"
FFS there are so many "Putin's little helpers" out there.
Wednesday letters : Lorraine Allanson is back with a long letter quoting facts like the £10 community fund payment from Cuadrilla.
The court judgement against FoE etc.
.
Next antifracking letter from Hazel Winter
claims it's proven fracking increases emissions
..Actually US is the only country where emissions have fallen ..and thats said to be cos of fracking
Friday : YP airs Tory councillor ..well he does oppose loosening up of fracking planning
They reproduce his Conservative Home piece
..which has debunking comments from AndrewMontford
YP version has few comments
and they preview it with another article "poll says Tory councillors don't back fracking"
Monday small pro-fracking letter praising Lorraine Allanson's
but cheekily illustrated by ANTI-fracking photo, captioned "Opposition to fracking has been widespread"
Tuesday : Glyn Wild's anti-fracking letter lays into Lorraine Allanson and says that we don't need fracking.
'We can have better insulation and Universal Basic Income' like the green party say
Today 2 letters : complaining about gov pro fracking rules
They make ridiculous claim that a fracking well less permission than a garden wall or conservatory.
