The best smile of relief that will come out of Coronavirus deaths will be Australians beginning the extermination of Green Blob legislation.

http://joannenova.com.au/2020/04/coronavirus-reality-check-means-australian-green-tape-is-on-the-chopping-block/

Now is the perfect time to get rid of pointless green burdens on our economy
Thanks to the rude wake up call from a real global pandemic, suddenly the fluffy luxury of “Green” rules and strangling red tape are put in the right perspective. Few are going to complain.

Despite this outbreak appearing to tick the Green Left fantasy list, any reality check exposes how frivolous most fashionable angst is. There is a great opportunity here to clean out some of the worst of the Big Government burden.

The Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act is in the governments sights:

Green tape to be cleared for recovery
Richard Ferguson and Dennis Shanahan, The Australian

Environment Minister Sussan Ley is set to cut green tape in time for October’s post-coronavirus federal budget, as a new report shows restrictive environmental regulations have grown 4½ times since 2000 and threaten to hamper the economic recovery.

Think tank the Institute of Public Affairs’s new study of federal environment laws found regulations have grown by more than 10 per cent each year and have delayed up to $65bn in new investment.

As Scott Morrison looks ahead to rebuilding the Australian economy after the coronavirus crisis passes, the government is moving to clear its backlog of environmental decisions on dams, roads, public transport, mines and other key projects by June.

National Cabinet will be asked to fast track review of Australian environmental regulations
Lanai Scarr, The West Australian

National Cabinet will be asked to fast-track a major 10-year review of Australia’s environmental regulations as a way to boost the nation’s economic revival and cut green tape post the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many projects, including in the WA resources sector, often get tied up in environmental assessments for long periods, acting as a wet blanket for investment.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said today reducing green tape would be key.

Should kill off any dependence on dendrothermometry. The sooner they start, the better.

It's likely pointless to second guess Mr. Trump - but I cannot help thinking his disinfectant waffling might be something to do with this

- but we haven't hit "The Road to Welville" yet

Interesting tomo but not astonishing. I really can't fathom why the government was taken by surprise that orders would be impounded. In fact almost every area where the government was taken by surprise (good behavior and bad), I'm bemused as to why. Those behaviour modellers need to be sacked as flipping a coin would have got better results.

Apr 26, 2020 at 5:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterTinyCO2

exasperatingly - the government doesn't sack its serially wrong modellers or the six figure salaried NHS procurement dopes.

As I keep repeating we are looking at a rerun of the 2010 volcanic ash fiasco. I would not be surprised to find that Willie Walsh has organised COVID arrivals testing at Heathrow. I know of 3 doctors in the SW who volunteered for coronavirus duties some 6 weeks ago and thankfully they haven't had a call - in fact nuthin.... and a minor injuries unit nurse who's twiddling been her thumbs for three weeks.

I rather like the term "fractal precautionary principle"...........

China has been doing sufficient to keep the Global Warming scare simmering away, as each new wave of legislative stupidity simply drove more manufacturing out of the UK, EU and USA, and in to China.

From UK broadcast interviews, it seems that neither journalists nor politicians are allowed to raise this simple cause of a simple problem with ready made simple solution.

There's a good way to put a spanner in China's plans - full labelling on products, especially when sold online. I'm sick of accidentally ordering stuff from China.

Apr 28, 2020 at 9:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterTinyCO2

We've done our best to boycott Chinese products for years:

1. A despicable regime with an appalling human rights record;

2. An equally appalling record as to the treatment of animals (pandas are an exception, because they're a big money-spinner).

3. Many of their products are of extremely poor quality, and drop to bits/fail to work very well. They're usually cheap, and thus are strong evidence in support of the argument that "you get what you pay for".

4. Destroying British jobs to export them to China and transport products half-way round the globe instead of from a local manufacturer makes no sense at any level, from the economic to the environmental.

Unfortunately "greens" are keen to make UK manufacturing costs expensive by foisting expensive energy on them, and so many UK manufacturers have given up the uneven struggle, and it's increasingly difficult to avoid buying Chinese-made products. Beware of boxes with a Union Jack on them. It often turns out that the product was designed in the UK, but made in China.
